Anime Expo 2011 Diary: Day 0 + 1
Read on as I share my experiences and photos from Day 0 and Day 1 of Anime Expo 2011!
There was nothing much to report for Day 0. It’s just a day for pre-registered people to pick up their badges so they don’t have to wait in line in Day 1. Not too many people went all-out in cosplays. The main issue was line management—there were attendees who found openings and cut into the lines. That seems to be a problem every year, more so since AX came to the Los Angeles Convention Center. I remember the first year they had it here, the line used to be in a building, but now attendees are fighting to get under some shade as they wait in the hot sun.

AX2011 was more cosplay-heavy in Day 1, especially with Panty and Stocking costumes.
Again, there were long lines. There was a long line for those who pre-registered but weren’t able to come during Day 0, and a line to get into the exhibit hall, but it seemed like they were under control. AX has been growing since I’ve been attending around 2001 and it certainly has shown. If you know how big LACC is, then imagine it literally packed in all the small and main halls.
Artist Alley has improved the past 3 years that I’ve been checking it out and a couple years I’ve shared my wares. Most of the issues there were about spacing. It had gotten pretty crowded for attendees and artists alike, especially for the artists. We would be back to back and it would be hard to exit our tables because the walkway to get out would be so narrow, but that had been fixed this year. Now there’s plenty of space to get in and out of your booth comfortably.
The exhibitors seem to be lacking a bit. The hall used to be full of them, but now there seems to be a little more extra space. I bought my GF an Okami Den Pillow Pal right when I saw it because I knew she wanted one so bad; they were sure to sell out quick, especially since the price was actually reasonable.
There were some pretty nice costumes out on Day 1. I was only able to catch the Panty and Stocking gathering and just walked around scouting for random well-done costumes. I got all excited when I saw League of Legend cosplayers since I recently got into playing the PvP MMORPG. I found a Teemo, Jax, Nurse Akali, Caitlyn, Annie and Malzahar. That Teemo did a pretty good job!
As far as panels go, I was only able to attend the Danny Choo panel. I actually never really went to panels much in the past. I mainly went to AX to cosplay. This year I’m on the other side of the camera for once (haha). It was an interesting panel. He talked about a new TV series project he was working on called “Culture: Japan” and gave us a video sneak peak. I’ll post that later since it’s going to take awhile to upload with our hotel wi-fi. He then went to talk about life management and making most of your time and overcoming obstacles among other things. Then he talked about dealing with trolls (haha). It was a pretty long-winded panel, but it was getting late for me! (I was getting tired and thirsty.) In the end, we all took a group photo, not that you’ll be able to see me since everyone was way taller than me and got on the chairs. I held my camera as high as I could so maybe I’ll be able to spot it when/if the photo gets put up.
Day 1 was fun. I got to take photos of some cool costumes and went to a Danny Choo panel. Hopefully the costumes will get more awesome in the coming days.
Again, don’t be afraid to come up to me if you spot me and we’ll take a photo and put it up on a post in our site!
