New and Notable Manga From 6/02-6/09

1. Danganronpa - Kibou no Gakuen to Zetsubou no Koukousei

image

Author: Spike Chunsoft
Artist:   Touya Hajime
Genre(s): Mystery, Shounen

“A group of 15 elite high-school students are gathered at a very special, high-class high school. To graduate from this high school essentially means you’ll succeed in life, but graduating is very difficult. The school is presided over by a bear called Monokuma, and he explains to them that their graduation hinges around committing a murder. The only way to graduate is to kill one of your classmates and get away with it. If the other classmates discover the identity of the killer, the killer is the only one executed. However, if they fail to catch the killer, only the killer graduates and the others are annihilated. Which of the 15 will survive the bloodbath to come?” -Mangahere.com

Thoughts: The manga starts off fairly generic, but if there is anything that I have heard from the ever growing fanbase, is that some crazy stuff happens. Twists galore.

“Pokémon X/Y” Roundtable Highlights

This video clip summarizes what have been announced at E3, which includes the Sky Battle, horde encounters, the Fairy type and the three new Pokémon. The Pokémon Company President Tsunekazu Ishihara and Game Freak Inc. Director Junichi Masuda were at the presentation providing some firsthand information of the new games.

New “Pokémon X/Y” Footage

In this short trailer, we are shown a few new concepts for the upcoming Pokémon games. There are Sky Battles and horde encounters shown in the clip, as well as a few new Pokémon that have been identified. The first new one you see is called Talonflame, a Fire/Flying Pokémon and the evolved form of Fletchling; next are Skrelp, which is a Poison and Water dual type, and Clauncher, a Water type, and they know Sludge Bomb and Crabhammer respectively.

Also confirmed is riding other Pokémon, like Rhyhorn. It seems like a different Pokémon can be borrowed to traverse different landscapes — Rhyhorn for rocky terrains.

In addition, it’s been revealed that you may choose a language of your choice within the games, having a selection of English, French, Italian, German, Spanish, Japanese and Korean. Player Search System (PSS) is a function which enables you to find players to battle or trade with, either through local or global means. When battling with a friend, you may choose your own battle music.

Even though the games will continue to hold single save files, developers are said to be working on backwards compatibility. For the hardcore trainers out there, IVs and EVs will be more visible within the games.

There are CoroCoro leaks out there with new Pokémon, characters and a new town, but English localization have not been made yet, so please be patient or check the source site.

Geek Spotlight: The MPAA Ratings System and Why It Doesn’t Work

image

As I sat in the theater last weekend waiting for my screening of The Purge to begin, the strangest thing happened… Three little children, ranging in age from probably five to eight years old, wandered into the theater. As a responsible and concerned parent myself, I worried that they had mistaken this theater for the one showing Epic, so I began to rise from my seat and direct them back to the lobby, when something even stranger happened… Their father entered and directed them to their seats. Then he left the theater, which just about made me jump out of my seat, but it turned out, he was just headed to the concession stand, as he returned several minutes later with popcorn and goodies.

Now, I write all of this as someone who accompanied his mother to films like Nightmare on Elm Street 4-6, Pet Sematary & Graveyard Shift, but there is a fundamental difference between the horror films of yesterday and today, which I’ll explore in more detail a bit later. The biggest and most immediate flaw that needs fixing, however, is the ratings system in The United States that allows deadbeat parents to bring their young children to such films, rather than seeking out a babysitter like any responsible parent should. Let’s delve into the history of the ratings system and then discuss further why it’s fundamentally flawed and needs to be revamped sooner rather than later…
