Anime Review: Mirai Nikki - 5

There’s a reference here, I just know it! Something to do with Rangers… maybe different colors? Diary users with attitude possibly? I can’t remember!

——

The death of Sixth and Twelfth bring the total body count up to three, with five diary users who have yet to be introduced. I honestly expected nothing else from Twelfth’s death. It was just as eccentric and entertaining as the character and overall, it was just really fitting. Twelfth did start this episode off with the impression that he would no longer be important to the story, so his death wasn’t as affecting as Sixth’s. Sixth’s death was surprisingly tragic, especially with all of the allusions to her past. She is probably the most complex character to make an appearance in the anime (that we know of). The very end was especially poignant, with her reaching for the ball with her recently amputated right hand. I honestly don’t know how to feel about her death because I liked her as a character.

Yuki is still Yuki, but at least he starts taking action. And what better way to start off than saving our favorite psychotic yandere. Yuki’s actions in this episode were all reactionary and I think that’s what annoys me about him. He still doesn’t do anything for himself and is forced by the situation to do something at the last minute. Still, I have to give credit where credit is due, and the way he killed Sixth was actually really clever. Yuno wasn’t as great as she was last week, but even when she becomes feverish, she still does more than Yuki.

I don’t think there’s anything Mirai Nikki can surprise me with anymore. This episode really showed how dark this series intends to be. Many of my friends have told me that the manga is much better and that I should read it, but I prefer to watch these episodes without any foreknowledge. I get the distinct impression that knowing what will happen will detract from the story and I can’t really afford for that to happen, especially since I’ve become desensitized to all the gore and violence.

That said, I am really enjoying this anime! Can’t wait for next week!
