Geek Spotlight: Spike Video Game Awards 2011: Pre-Award Report

Tonight (Dec 10), one of the biggest awards show for the games’ industry is taking place — Spike Video Game Awards. During the show, games will definitely be a big focus among gamers, all supporting their favourites vying out for that particular award.

You can check out the nominees for the show over at the official site.

While winners of the night will be a big focus, another main feature of the VGA is of course the many game reveals and teasers that developers will announce during the show itself.
For those who are interested in all the wonderful gaming news to stream out of the show, Population GO has put up a summary of the game reveals teased in the weeks leading up to the VGAs for you to keep track of. We’ll also be bringing you news from the show as timely as we possibly can.

Hit the cut for the summaries.

Existing Game Announcements

1) Alan Wake

One of the earliest teasers for the VGA. There is, however, much mystery about this title. While it has been confirmed as an XBLA title, it seems that no one can be sure whether it’s just a spin-off or a sequel (Alan Wake 2). Even the title of the game is in debate: Is it Amercian Nightmare or Night Springs?!

2) Bioshock Infinite

A new trailer for the game will be shown during the show and a screen from the trailer has been released as a teaser.

3) Mass Effect 3

BioWare will be revealing an all-new trailer of the highly anticipated RPG game during the show, as Shepherd reaches the end of his/her story.

4) Metal Gear Solid Rising

Hideo Kojima will be at VGA 2011 to give gamers “the truth” about this game, which has long been in development and little has been known about it. There might be a new trailer shown, and hopefully a release date.

5) The Amazing Spider-Man

The tie-game to the Spider-Man film adaptation reboot will also be shown during the show. The game has been said to have a “Web Rush mechanic”, which will alow gamers to “pull off a vast array of moves never before possible,” and will also take gamers all over and under Manhattan.

The Spider-Man games in the past have been more misses than hits, so hopefully this one can be a hit. Most likely a trailer and maybe a release date will be revealed.

6) Transformers : Fall of Cybertron

The sequel to War for Cybertron, High Moon Studios will bring gamers a new trailer which will definitely be shown during the show. Hopefully, this will bring us all the robots in diguise action we need.

New Game Reveals

1) BioWare

Besides ME3, BioWare has another card up its sleeve. A brand new game from a brand new BioWare Studio. There have been rumours about what the game would be, Mercenaries, etc. But recent domain registrations seemed to have pointed the direction towards a new Command & Conquer game, named Command & Conquer Alliances. Well, we’ll have to wait till Saturday to find out.

2) Epic Games

Cliffy B has revealed that he will be personally announcing a new IP reveal during the show by the studio for its 20th anniversary. He claims that the new IP will be an entirely “fresh and new experience” for the studio. Mike Capps, Epic’s president, has also said that the game is “something radically different” for the studio and they are “scared to death” about fans’ reaction to the game.

Now they’re getting me scared too and biting my nails in anticipating for the VGA.

3) Tony Hawk

Tony Hawk announced through his Twitter a few days ago that he will be announcing a “upcoming release of something new” on Saturday. More likely than not, it will be another Tony Hawk game.

4) The Last of Us

Sony’s latest PS3 exclusive first teased us with a seemingly post-apocalyptic trailer, and then a teaser site with two very cryptic screenshots. The game is claimed to be from “an amazing developer” according to Geoff Keighley, and the trailer to be shown will show gamers the world environment and characters, all rendered with the in-game engine—meaning development must have gone on for a while now.

Then we see someone spotting a reference to the game in Uncharted 3. Could the “amazing developer” be Naughty Dog then?

5) THQ

For a while now, we’ve heard little from Guillermo Del Toro’s game with THQ. So when THQ core games EVP teased about working with “a big film director” and announcing the game title and other information during the VGA, we knew it would be Del Toro’s long-rumoured game. So I’m guessing we’ll be seeing a trailer, game title as well as studio involved in the game. Oh and gaming platforms too! Can’t wait to see this!
