Anime Review: Inu x Boku SS - 6

Japanese schools always seem so laid back in anime.  I’m pretty sure I’d get suspended if I tried to pull this kind of stunt.

——

This week’s episode is a much welcome change from the S & M fiasco last time.  We spend a lot more time focusing on the relationships between the three school mates, and Karuta is such a strange bird that I can’t help but love her.  We’ve mostly just seen her wandering around the apartment and looking cute, so getting to hear her speak more than a handful of words and actually do something was refreshing.  I also enjoy the fact that since she constantly stuffs her face, she knows her way around the kitchen like the back of her hand; a far improvement over the gluttonous characters that constantly whine at others to cook for them.

It’s possible that this episode could be looked at as filler, but I think that it serves a very important purpose in that it shows Ririchiyo starting to come out of her shell.  We see her as this socially awkward, kind of nerdy, but ultimately very sweet adolescent girl, and regardless of her reservations about other people, Karuta and Watanuki are so genuine that she can’t help but feel at ease with them.

There’s a fight scene that was pretty nice, and I really liked the design of the snake woman; she was just the right amount of freaky and intriguing.  It’s also always fun to see Karuta’s skeleton form; I’d forgotten just how HUGE she is.  Watanuki, of course, tries very hard to contribute to the fight, but I think he’s going to have to get used to Karuta coming to his rescue (coughOTPcough).

We don’t see much of the other characters, save for a brief scene where Zange shows up at the school, but we do see Ririchiyo reflecting on her feelings for Soushi with hilarious results.  I like how the conclusion she jumps to is an incredibly natural one, albeit one that we don’t usually see our kawaii heroines reaching (“I’m just sexually attracted to him, it’s not love”).

This was a vast improvement over last week, and although I’m a bit miffed at how the sequence of events is being changed around compared to the manga, I admittedly like the pacing.  I can’t wait to see their wonderful, admittedly bizarre, friendship continue to blossom.
