Anime Review: Mobile Suit Gundam AGE - 19

Fast forward…again.

——

With the fated meeting between Asemu and Zeheart out of the way, it’s time for them to take their place in the war. This episode is more about the exposition of their new roles and the other characters they have been placed with. On Asemu’s side, we’re introduced to many of the new crew members of the Diva, including Arisa Gunhale, the daughter of Flit’s childhood friend, and Dique, who is also brought back in this episode as the chief mechanic on the Diva. We also have the return of Woolf Enneacle and Millais, who will serve as commanding officer of the mobile suit team and captain of the Diva. It’s been 30 years since their first involvement in the war, so it’s clear on their designs that they’ve aged quite a bit.

We’re also introduced to this phase’ title Gundam, the Gundam AGE-2, which features a transformable feature into a flight mode, meaning there’s no doubt that the war with the Vagan will eventually reach the surface of the Earth. As for this episode, the newly formed Woolf team and the Gundam AGE-2 are tested by the forces of the newly promoted Zeheart who is now commander of the Vagan forces in the area. There’s now more variety to the Diva’s forces, as its compliment of mobile suits include the G-Bouncer piloted by Woolf, the Genoace II piloted Obright Lorain and the two Adeles piloted by Max Hartway—whose surname is probably an homage to the Hathaways—and Arisa Gunhale.

The battle itself isn’t anything to special, as the only pilots who faced difficulty were the two rookies, Max and Arisa. Woolf and Asemu make short work of the reconnaissance squad of Durodas, albeit Asemu risked the safety of the Diva to do so. What was important to me was that taking the Gundam and G-Bouncer aside, the canon fodder mobile suits look to be on par with one another in terms of strength.

Episode 19 wasn’t a special episode, but it was nice seeing the re-introduction of old characters, as well as the debut of new characters for the crew of the Diva. Asemo and company have just entered the war so it’ll be interesting see where this conflict will lead them all.
