Anime Review: Brave 10 - 7

It’s that time of the week again…
——

With the series entering its second half, I was hoping for a little more progression in the story with Yukimura heading to Kyou to respond to Tokugawa’s invitation. But sadly, once again, there was very little of that. The first half of the episode is purely used for the introduction of one of the last two remaining Braves, the newly-christened Benmaru. With gunpowder explosives and traps as his weapons, he auditions Yukimura and his group to be his lord, which ends up being yet another rescue Isanami story for that first half of the episode. It’s quickly resolved with the timely intervention Seikai and Kamanosuke.

The rest of the episode is pretty much about Yukimura and Date Masamune, as well as the other feudal lords. The conflict in this second half is just Date challenging Yukimura in the hopes of humiliating/killing the man in front of Ieyasu and all the other lords, but winds up being toyed with. The fight itself isn’t anything that interesting with the exception of the resolution in which Yukimura disarms Date with the use of his toes. The biggest problem I’ve had with Yukimura’s character is that, through seven episodes, he’s been infallible with everything seemingly going his way without any difficulties springing up.

That being the case, this has made the entire series as a whole just dull and devoid of any tension because everything just works out in the end. So far, only Saizou has felt defeat (not counting Kamanosuke’s loss to Saizou and Seikai’s loss to Isanami), which led to some minuscule development of what this series likes to call a character. Just five more episodes to go… I can make it.
