Anime Review: Another - 7

So now that Akazawa doesn’t have to avoid Kouichi anymore, she’s moving in for the kill. (The metaphorical one, not the literal one.)

——

Incredibly graphic and gratuitous bloody opening death aside, this week’s episode was a little plain. I’m starting to annoy myself with how much I make this show about the gore, but given the graphicness of the deaths, it’s hard for me not to focus on them. But when Another focuses more on its mystery aspect, I tend to get a little bored. Though I guess I have to make the distinction between my being bored and the episode being boring. Much of what happened this episode was really just relationship dynamics changing and more plot questions being addressed. The show has become more thoughtful and about speculating between the main members of the class. The show is definitely still interesting, but in a different way than when people were dying left and right.

I’m working on the suspicion that Kouichi is actually the extra, but everything is still up in the air. Everyone is just so dang suspicious. Mei is reverting back to being an enigma. Her answers are getting unsettlingly cryptic, as are Akazawa’s. Chibiki is also suspect, but for a different reason. I understand that as the teacher of the last class before the phenomenon started, he’s seen as an authority about it all, but it seems a little too convenient that he’s the go-to for Kouichi, Akazawa, and the assistant teacher Mikami. Heck, even the minor classmates are bothering me. It may just be the general atmosphere of the show, but everyone’s standing with everyone else is changing a lot. It might be that Another is emphasizing the mystery portion of the show now that I’m second-guessing everyone though. Like I said before, I may be less interested but the show is definitely not boring.

Imagine my surprise when the preview for next week shows everyone at a beach. I thought this show would be the first to forego the obligatory swimsuit episode. But given the great pacing and storytelling that has been going so far, I hardly expect the quality of the show to dip just because they’re having fun in the sun. Another is slowing down, but it’s still one of the best shows this season.
