Anime Review: Natsume Yuujinchou-Shi - 8

That’s not Natsume…

——

It’s episodes like this that can prove to be a slight deterrent for those who haven’t seen the previous series. This episode features a character that I’m assuming has appeared in prior seasons, and thus her name is never actually mentioned at all. Despite that lack of knowledge, it doesn’t take away from the episode at all, which is once again a self-contained, but interesting story involving a younger version of the character.

The story for this episode only has a slight connection to Natsume himself, but sees the exorcist brought into the story by Nyanko-sensei in a funny manner. In typical Nyanko-sensei fashion, he stumbles upon her inside a well-containing sealed youkai and he unwittingly traps them in here. From there the rest of the story is told through flashbacks of the exorcist at an early stage of her life. In this particular series, she is the third exorcist to appear and she provides another outlook on how exorcists view the youkai. There’s Matoba and his clan, which hunt down youkai for power, there’s Natori, who leads a double life, and then there’s this unnamed exorcist, whose story involves the moral choices of which youkai to exorcise.

All in all, episode eight is probably the weakest episode since episode three, but it still proves to be entertaining in its own way. It’s another interesting self-contained story that is about another character like episode five; but unlike episode five, there is no real connection between her character and Natsume. There’s only four episodes remaining, so it’ll be interesting to see what other stories are left to be told.
