Anime Review: Mobile Suit Gundam AGE - 21

X-Rounder Grade: D, Inferiority Complex Grade: SS.

Having escaped Zeheart’s ambush and making it safely back to Big Ring, the Diva and its crew are given a bit of reprieve in anticipation of what Flit has revealed will be a massive battle to defend Big Ring. The Vagans are planning to assault Big Ring with a massive force to clear the way for an invasion of Earth. So with that in mind, this episode is all about delving into some of the new characters, but mainly focusing in on the main character Asemu and how he is dealing with what is basically his first major failure in battle after he lost to Zeheart in the previous episode.

Now some of the other characters are delved into a bit, but this episode is really about Asemu. There are a ton of interesting moments surrounding his character in this episode with how he can’t live up to his father and Zeheart as being X-Rounders. It remains to be seen if he will eventually unlock any X-Rounder potential, but I’m really banking on him just being a regular pilot and overcoming enemy X-Rounders. It would add a new level of depth to his character and something that would set set him apart from past lead pilots with superpowered abilities. There’s also a scene between him and Romary that looks like it will set up future drama in what looks to be a love triangle.

The rest of the episode deals with Asemu training to make up for his shortcomings as an X-Rounder with the help of Woolf, Madorna and his son Rody. What’s great about this is that even in the simulator Asemu is getting beaten down by programmed versions of Zeheart and his father. It’s great in the sense in that Asemu is given a measuring stick to grow without making things easy for him because he struggles immensely against the simulations. So overall, this was a great character episode that sets up the huge battle that’s about to happen.
