Anime Review: Accel World - 2

F*ck the Police! Ash Roller does what he wants!

——

This show just keeps reminding me of Gurren Lagann, except now, I have another parallel to draw. The Black Snow Princess a.k.a. Black Lotus is obviously Kamina in chick form. I mean, the inspirational speech at the end basically summed up to “Don’t believe in yourself, believe in me that believes in you.” So really, Girl Kamina with sexual tension with our hero… which I can totally dig! OH MY GOD, that is hilarious to me. And the fact that Haruyuki basically rejects her is just so precious. The short fat dude rejecting the school beauty doesn’t happen often enough, seriously. But the best thing is that this show doesn’t feel like a knock-off. It’s enjoyable in its own right and really fun to watch. These connections to Gurren Lagann just makes it funnier for me and makes everything more enjoyable.

I love that fact that despite being a show all about being the best that you can be (or something… I’m not quite sure yet), it still finds ways to crack me up. I can practically guarantee that you will not find a Magical Girl Transformation for a piglet in any other anime. There is nowhere else that would make sense. Hell, it barely makes sense here. But this show is just brilliant at using the cheap laughs really well. For instance, I did not expect that Haruyuki would just straight up lose the opening fight. OP protagonists have taught me to expect them to fluke into a victory. Silver Crow’s first headbutt was also funny because of the incredible build-up to nothing. I know that these gags don’t sound like the newest wave of gag comedy, but they were pulled off so well within the show that it was hard not to find them funny. Accel World doesn’t try to be funny all the time, just when it matters and to clue you back in to the fact that Haruyuki is learning at the same pace we are.

I am having an absolute ball watching this anime. In fact, to quote Augustus Waters, I am “on a roller coaster that only goes up” when it comes to this show. There’s so much more I want to comment on but for the sake of brevity, I’ll spare you from that. This series is absolutely amazing at striking that balance between action and comedy and is just awesome in general. If you didn’t trust me before, trust me now because this show is just going to get better from here.

Seriously. Trust.
