The battle for Nortrum continues!
And with this episode, the Battle for Nortum concludes! Picking up right where the last episode ended off, there is no time for Flit, Asemu or the rest of the Woolf team to mourn the loss of their comrade as the true objective of the Vagan assault is discovered. Flit heads out onto the battlefield with the Gundam AGE-1 equipped with a new weapons system as Asemu rediscovers his raison d’etre for fighting in this war. There’s a lot of tension riding on the conclusion of this battle as it’s made quite clear how important this victory is for either side.
The battle doesn’t come without more losses on both sides as the latest casualty for the Diva’s personnel is the engineer, Remi, who heroically sacrifices herself to protect the Diva’s bridge from an assault by the Magician 8’s Mink, who is subsequently shoved into the oncoming photon cannon blast by Obright’s Genoace II. The episode spares some time for Obright to make his way to the dying Remi, who leaves him with some parting words right before he’s able to reach her. It’s a heart-wrenching death and one that actually comes as a role reversal for people who are familiar with the Gundam series. In cases like this, Obright’s marriage proposal would have foreshadowed his death and not Remi’s, but her decision to head out and repair the Diva sealed her fate.
Afterwards though, the episode takes a bit of a downward turn for me as the temporary alliance between Zeheart and Asemu feels way too convenient despite their mutual goal in destroying the reactor core: the Downes space fortress. For all that just went on between them in the past ten episodes, this resolution to their conflict at this point just feels abrupt and forced. Despite that, episode 27 was a great watch overall and now the war changes its battlefields to Earth. Just what is Lord Elzecant truly planning and how far ahead has he prepared?
