Comic Review: Wonder Woman #9

It’s the wedding we’ve all been waiting for! Well… Diana probably isn’t, but I’m sure little Hades is excited. Anyway, continuing from the events of last issue we see Wonder Woman, shot through the heart with one of Cupid’s bullets, about to wed Hades in the underworld.
Well, this can’t go well… read on for my review!

I didn’t expect this to be a part of the story at all when it was introduced in the end of last months issue, but damn did it make for a surprising and interesting twist. Most of the issue focuses on Diana getting ready for her big day and donning her beautifully morbid wedding dress, but those scenes are complete with great character moments for her and a certain former wife to Hades. Plus we get an exciting look at the God of War, and the rest of the gang gets ready to head into Hell to rescue Diana from her fate. It all leads into a conclusion which brings this issues cover to reality, and it should have every reader greatly anticipating next months issue.
There’s not much more to say. It was another great issue for this great series, but the one thing that brought it down was the art. Tony Akins, who has drawn a couple of the past issues of the series, takes over artistic duties on this issue from Cliff Chiang, and while he does a good job of emulating the feel that Chiang delivers on this title it just isn’t the same. There’s just something about his work that changes the characters in subtle but noticeable ways. It’s not so distracting that it makes the issue hard to read or anything, but I can’t help but wish we still had Chiang here. The sooner he comes back on the series the better. Sorry, Tony.
Anyway, fans of the series won’t be disappointed at all with Azzarello’s continuing story, and if you haven’t been reading the series thus far then look out for the hardcover coming later this month!
