I can’t be the only one who made the connection between Aqua Current and Miku Hatsune. I refuse to believe it.
Muscling my way through this episode did not require a lot of muscle. Which is actually a good thing since I don’t have very much anymore. But it did help that it was fairly enjoyable at times. The tag team fight with Aqua Current was a let down; I don’t know why I’m expecting some great fighting sequences from this anime, but I do. The fact that I expect anything at all really says something about what I think about this anime, though. I really want this show to blow me away visually and every time the fights fall flat is another bit of anxiety that I might have misjudged Accel World.
The whole Taku thing also fell short of my expectations, though. Taku coming into the folds of Nega Nebulous was pretty cut and dry, despite being a bit long-winded. This week’s episode definitely felt like it was trying to get to a destination, rather than focusing on telling the story well. I don’t know if that was a good thing or not, but I am pretty anxious to explore new territory.
I ended up liking Current a lot more than I thought I would. She’s much more passive in the show than on the page, but it worked for her. If her parting words are anything to go by, we’ll be seeing her return to our story line sometime soon. Sooner rather than later I hope, as right now Accel World is stagnating for me. Hopefully this red-headed loli in the preview will stick around permanently since there’s not a whole lot going on with our four protagonists. There aren’t a whole lot of entertaining over-the-top character dynamics that are in play there. In fact, everyone’s pretty serious to each other, with Haru being jumpier than the others. So having another character stir the pot would be a pretty nice deal right now.
I’m holding out for something to really blow me away in this show, and so far there are hints that it can and will do that soon. Maybe in time for the end of the season, as Accel World has a two season arc and will want to compete with seasons ending in a month. I won’t hold my breath, though; I’ve learned better at this point.
