Anime Review: Uchuu Kyoudai - 10

Looks like Mutta’s gonna need to do a bit of soul searching.
——

With the third JAXA exam looming some doubts have begun to gnaw at Mutta as he comes to the realization that maybe his desire to become an astronaut isn’t up to par with all the other candidates. They have so much more to sacrifice and accomplish in order to achieve their dream, and by comparison Mutta feels that he himself doesn’t live have those very same qualities in him. With his doubts we get to see a return of Aunt Sharon who he consults prior to the third exam. By talking to her all doubts that he had were instantly washed away. We once again see how much of a motherly figure she’s played and continues to play in his life with her words of encouragement, and it’s a great relationship that they’ve developed over the years.

As the episode rolls along, the third JAXA exam begins almost immediately as Makabe notices. Despite witnessing Mutta’s observational skills while he was in Houston, it seems they only tend to be of use to him when he’s focused and determined. In a funny gag, Makabe misinterprets Mutta’s observation skills as he believes that Mutta has noticed that the exam began the moment they stepped on the bus, when in fact Mutta just noticed that the driver was bald. The exam begins with an ice breaker in a confined environment. I tried to get a grasp of what the examiners are testing, but for the most part I was just enjoying some of the minor jokes that were featured during this part of the episode, namely the repeated gag of Makabe guessing his partner’s age and Mutta’s encounter with another candidate who can read what’s going on in his head.

I guess it’s also a bonus that Serika Itou is a Star Wars fan as well. I always love it when Star Wars is referenced in other shows and movies. The first part of the exam is over with another daunting task ahead of them as the candidates were asked to rank each other on how qualified they are in passing this exam. How this plays out in the next episode will be interesting. There’s only two episodes left and I can’t wait to see how this series ends.
