The Weekly Pull List: 06/20/12

Well hello there, and welcome to the latest edition of the Weekly Pull List!
Its business as usual here, as I am joined by fellow comics contributors Chris (littleyellowboxes) and Ryley (ryley-stbatman), as we each spotlight our top five picks from our Pull Lists for the week.
It’ll be a tough pick this week, with there being some exceptionally good comics hitting the stands. Daredevil the captive of Doctor Doom! The wedding of Wonder Woman and Hades! Oh, and then there’s the small matter of the Second Act of Avengers vs. X-Men kicking off!
Check out our picks below the cut.

CHRIS’S PICKS

AVENGERS ACADEMY #32
Whilst Sebastian Shaw and the Young X-Men have left the Academy, Avengers Vs. X-Men hasn’t finished with the Avengers Academy cadets just yet, as the newly Phoenix empowered Emma Frost arrives on their doorstep - the first thing on her agenda? Destroying the Sentinel!

DARK AVENGERS #176
The Dark Avengers have their first mission - infiltrate the Sultan Magus’ desert lair of Sharzhad. Whilst they attempt to not murder each other in the process, the time-lost Thunderbolts are still attempting to return home, and have their sights set on their best bet - Doctor Doom’s time machine!

JOURNEY INTO MYSTERY #640
The Manchester Gods are rampaging through Otherworld, and the only way to stop them is…well, Loki’s working on that. As Captain Britain, Meggan, and the other Otherworld forces attempt to halt the monstrous machines, Loki, Leah and Ikol will need to put their heads together in order to stop them - perhaps the answer lies inside?
UNCANNY X-MEN #14
The majority of the Extinction Team now have more important things on their mind, since they now possess the power of the Phoenix. So for now, let’s shift our attention to another major player in the X-Men Universe - what has Mister Sinister been doing since his hasty departure in issue 3, and how will it impact the X-Men when they return?
SPIDER-MAN: TROUBLE ON THE HORIZON HC
Collects: Amazing Spider-Man (1963) #678-681, #679.1
Working at Horizon Labs gives Peter Parker access to some of the best scientific minds and equipment in the world - it’s a dream job, and comes with many perks. It also comes with many dangers, as this selection of tales shows! Featuring a time travel door that destroys the future, a space station infested with mind-controlling octobots, and the living vampire in Lab 6!

RYLEY’S PICKS

CASANOVA AVARITIA #4
Matt Fraction’s third Casanova miniseries wraps up this month, and it’s sure to be great. For those who have never read any of Fraction’s Casanova minis, these books are full of layered and detailed stories about time and space travel and some of the craziest characters you’ll see on the shelves. Plus, awesome art by Gabriel Ba. Hopefully his fourth mini will be close around the corner because waiting on this series is always a bit of a pain (especially given how cerebral the stories are).

DAREDEVIL #14
Daredevil by this point is just a series I generally look forward to no matter what. I’ve yet to have been disappointed, and it just seems to get better as each issue goes forth. This issue sees ol’ hornhead against a certain Latverian that Marvel fans should be familiar with. I can’t wait to jump into this one!

SAGA #4
Much like Daredevil, Saga is a book I always look forward to month by month. Brian K Vaughn can do no wrong, and in this remarkable Sci-Fi series he continues to prove that fact. Plus he has Fiona Staples with him on the art, and every single page of hers is incredibly beautiful. If you aren’t already reading Saga, remedy that soon.

UNCANNY X-MEN #14
I’ve been growing a bit weary of the Avengers VS X-Men tie ins for this series, as they don’t seem to have been telling much of a story on their own, but rather just expanding some of the fights and plot points that happen in the main event. This issue, however, returns Mister Sinister to the series, and given how well Gillen handled that character at the beginning of this series I’m really anticipating seeing him use him here again.
Plus, now that five of the X-Men’s strongest members have been infected by the Phoenix Force, rendering them MIA, I’m wondering just how well the remaining members can deal with this large threat.

WONDER WOMAN #10
And finally there’s Wonder Woman, which is once again ANOTHER series I cannot wait for each month. Brian Azzarello’s story hasn’t had a bad issue yet, and at the end of each issue I’m on the edge of my seat waiting for the next one. This month Diana’s deep in her conflict with Hades, so we’ll see how she’ll make her way out of this one.
RYLEY IS ALSO PICKING UP…

SAM’S PICKS

BLUE BEETLE #10
Since Jaime’s move to New York in search of a superhero mentor, things haven’t exactly gone to plan. So far he’s tangled with Stopwatch which resulted in burning down a halfway house, and had a tussle with Green Lantern Kyle Rayner and Bleez! And things are about to get a lot worse, as Director Bones decides its time for the D.E.O. to find out just who this Blue Beetle is!

DAREDEVIL #14
After seemingly finally resolving the issue of the Omega Drive, you’d think that Matt Murdock would be able to rest easy for a bit. Of course not! Captured by Doctor Doom, the Man Without Fear is now at the mercy of the dictator, imprisoned for crimes against Latveria - and not even DD can talk his way out of this one!
Meanwhile, Foggy is back in NY, uncovering more clues as to the real mental state of his longtime friend. This looks set to be another awesome issue of Daredevil - even more so, as we are treated to the artistic talents of Chris Samnee!

GREEN LANTERN CORPS #10
The trial of John Stewart continues! Or should I say, the sentence is about to be carried out! Found guilty of murdering a fellow Green Lantern by the Alpha Lanterns, John has been given the maximum punishment - execution! Will Guy Gardner be able to save his friend, or will his new-found position in the Corps prove to be an empty one?
Oh, and just what are those pesky Guardians planning behind the scenes? The build up of the Third Army continues here!

WINTER SOLDIER #7
Bucky’s hunt for the third sleeper agent just got personal! Awoken violently, the last Russian sleeper agent intends on continuing the war - his own personal war against the great traitor, Bucky Barnes! After sending out a message last issue, Leonid Nokonov intends on bringing Bucky’s world crashing down, and is equipped with the training to make that happen! This series has delivered from #1, and I fully expect this to be another thrilling issue. If nothing else, the price of admission is worth it for the fabulous pencils from Butch Guice.

WONDER WOMAN #10
The wedding of Hades and Wonder Woman! After being shot by the pistols of Eros, Diana is seemingly enthralled by the lord of the underworld - or is it just a ploy to ensure Zola’s safety? Guess we’ll find out this issue, as Hephaestus, Eros and Lennox attend the ceremony, seemingly intent on assisting Diana out of this mess!
This series has been absolutely fantastic so far, and I expect this issue to deliver more drama and shocks.
