Anime Review: Accel World - 11

Just all the more reason why Niko is glorious. Seriously, any character who doesn’t like creating incredible destruction isn’t worthy of my respect.

Alright, I’ll admit it: this week was pretty good. I got the big fight that I hoped for too, so everything’s honkey donkey in my book. Though, it doesn’t really change the fact that the story is moving at a glacial pace (which I guess isn’t a problem unique to Accel World this season). I still have no idea what the real connection between Yellow Radio and the Chrome Disaster armor is. Did Radio give it to Rook in order to kill off one of his Legion’s members? Or was it just lucky happenstance? And why does nobody even care about the issue until he shows up EVEN THOUGH that’s the entire reason they entered the Accel World? But I’m willing to forgive all that in light of the fact that the visual was pretty frickin’ amazing. Barring the dry opening and my still unanswered questions, the rest was just a nonstop accelerated digital brawl. Pretty fun, and really much what I expect from Accel World. Substance is good, backstory is fine, but when it comes right down to it, I want more action and more explosions. Boom! Bang! Ba-zing!

Yellow Radio seems like the typical sleazy, double-talking villain; uses words and ploys to get other people to do his dirty work or manipulate people. A typical antagonist, yet very well done here. I’m enjoying his conniving and such. I am very worried about Taku though, mainly: Is that it?! What happens to him now? Did that pillar of light mean he’s gone from the Accel World forever? What about the whole Chiyu situation? It doesn’t seem like he should have been written out so early, particularly since he hasn’t really done anything; his entire character arc feels cheated if this was the end of him. The last issue I have is what happens to Yellow Radio? Who takes the points from his kill? That’s literally the only thought I had when he got stabbed at the end of the episode. But really, other than that, this episode was pretty cut and dry. It was a fan service fighting episode, and frankly, we were overdue for one.

I don’t know if it’s an issue of me lowering my expectations, or Accel World getting the job done, but I’m still very approving of the story so far. I probably shouldn’t be, but there you go. It’s not looking like this pattern’s going to change at all either. Fine by me; bring on the mindless cartoon violence!
