Anime Review: Tasogare Otome x Amnesia - 12 [Final]

Kirie’s right: That is a very impressive outfit you’ve got there, Okonogi.

This was a really bright episode. Unusually so, though that may be because the first third or so featured a lot of snow. Very weird to know that it was Tasogare Otome x Amnesia and having my eyes hurt from brightness rather than straining to see something.

The episode itself? Eh. It was a’ight. Fairly predictable, in my opinion. I don’t feel like there’s a whole much to say on the issue. The episode itself was pretty straight forward: Yuuko is disappearing after addressing all her worldly regrets. Basically, it was just the Yuuko and Teiichi’s drawn out, melodramatic tear-stained farewell. Which the last few minutes or so totally negates. The emotional rise and fall didn’t really suffer though. The episode was very poignant at the right places and drew me in as much as possible. I won’t lie and say that I didn’t like the ending. It was pretty heartwarming. I didn’t even really mind that the lyrics of the opening song didn’t really fit there. After reading them for 11 weeks and knowing the first lines mean “let me burn”… something like that should be detracting from the viewing experience, but thankfully this isn’t the case.

Pretty good topper on the season, I’d say. The episode itself wasn’t irrevocably flawed in any way that I could see. I had my own gripes about Teiichi being ridiculously over-the-top and Kirie and Okonogi being swept aside, but all in all, a decent episode.

Final thoughts

The show as a whole was pretty fun. I wouldn’t go back and watch it again unless I was really invested into the title or something. I can’t help but wonder if the anime told the complete story. It seemed fairly short yet very complete in its narrative. But that’s a rarity in itself it seems, where endings actually mean something ends. So I have to commend Tasogare Otome x Amnesia for committing to the 12 episodes it had rather than keep us guessing on a second season or something.

There was a lot going on in this series and for that reason, a little hard to enjoy in a singular way. Of course the love story between our two main protagonists was a key element of the story, but so were the mystery and the occult ones. The show was meant to be very dramatic with the idea of reconciling one’s past, making it pretty heavy. And then there were the sight gags and general lighthearted silliness that was thrown in from time to time. And they were all done fairly well, though the overall effect was that each aspect of the show was diluted. For instance, this last episode focused more on the romance between Teiichi and Yuuko, but it didn’t really make my heart break. While I enjoyed it and thought it very sweet, I wasn’t as invested in their romance as I think I could have been because that time was spent on the mystery and the supernatural aspects the show. Pretty much a “jack of all trades, expert in none” type of deal.

This was a solid anime. It was fun to watch, but I wouldn’t really recommend it out to anyone. Nor would I really rewatch it; there’s not a lot there to go back and enjoy a second time. Average, but in a good way and definitely not something I regret watching.
