Anime Review: [First Impression] Kokoro Connect - 1

The members of the Student Cultural Society are in for a bit of a surprise. But then, I guess switching bodies with each other will definitely give them plenty to write about for their paper.

A body swap is a body swap is a body swap, I guess. I don’t think I’ve ever watched a body swap anime before, but I know they exist and roughly how they go. And for all intents and appearances, Kokoro Connect seems to be embracing those time honored tropes wholeheartedly. I don’t know if it’s because I haven’t seen one before, or this particular anime is doing it well, but Kokoro Connect is doing a good job handling the body switching. Plus, it’s a lot to fun to watch for variety of reasons, apart from the obvious hilarity that will ensue. For one, it’s very easy on the the eyes. It’s a nicely drawn anime, very bright and generally visually appealing. The other is that the characters themselves are fun to watch. The chemistry in this show is pretty standard as far as Japanese humor goes, but it’s something that I’ve missed in these last couple seasons.

While I may be one to poke holes in a story early on, in this particular instance, let explanations be damned. If nothing else, then for the sole reason of it’s funnier that way. Justifying the whole body swap experience through some some sort of divine intervention or supernatural phenomenon would really be a buzzkill. I’ll be honest and say I don’t really care how or why it happened. Just having a show about body swapping for the sake of it is lighthearted, enjoyable, and to be honest, kinda funny. And may I take this opportunity to say that if I switched bodies with a girl, that is without a doubt the first thing I would do. I call shenanigans on any guy who doesn’t admit this would be their first instinct. In any case, trying to explain why the switches happen would be a drag because we don’t really need one at this point. I’m all for having fun with it, because right now it’s fun to watch as is.

I wouldn’t say that Kokoro Connect is a mindless watch, it certainly doesn’t involve a lot of higher level thinking. It looks to me that this show was made purely for fun’s sake and so far, it’s succeeding. I’m super looking forward to seeing how this anime goes.
