The Weekly Pull List: 07/18/12

Hello there, and welcome to the latest edition of the Weekly Pull List!
I am glad to be joined by my fellow comics contributors, Chris (littleyellowboxes) and Ryley (ryley-stbatman), as we each highlight our top five comics from this week’s releases.
Watch out people, as there is a new superhero in town! Carol Danvers gets a solo title once more, as she debuts in her new identity in Captain Marvel #1. There’s also more AvX madness in Avengers vs. X-Men #8 and the titles affected by the fallout, whilst the next story-arc begins in Wonder Woman #11.
Check out our picks below the cut.

CHRIS’S PICKS

AVENGERS ACADEMY #33
Emma Frost has arrived at the Avengers Academy, set on demolishing Juston Seyfert’s Sentinel - but the Academy are having none of it! Now it’s the entire Academy, staff and all, against the might of a Phoenix-powered Emma Frost. Hands up if you think this is going to end well? Yeah, me neither.

BLUE BEETLE #11
The Blue and Gold, together again for the first time, as Jaime crosses paths with Booster Gold! Having escaped the DEO last issue, Jaime now faces more problems when Paco and Brenda venture to the Big Apple in search of him and instead run afoul of Director Bones themselves. Plus, if Jaime and Paco get too close, the Blood Beetle may re-emerge…

CAPTAIN MARVEL #1
Carol Danvers has stepped up once again, and has shed her mantle as Ms. Marvel to take on the title of Captain Marvel. Having decided to be the best she can be in her previous ongoing series, this new series launches Carol in a whole new direction. I’ve been anticipating this series for a long time, and with writer Kelly Sue DeConnick on board, I think it’ll be even better than I’ve hoped.

JOURNEY INTO MYSTERY #641
How will Loki and Leah defeat the Manchester Gods? And will they really want to, when they’ve realised that they’re on the wrong side of the Otherworld Civil War? And whilst this is going on, let’s find out why Hela wanted the Holy Grail, shall we? This is almost the calm before the storm, as next issue, “Everything Burns”…

UNCANNY X-MEN #16
The Phoenix Five invade Sinister London, and it’s all-out war between the cosmic firebird and the clones of Mister Sinister! And when Sinister sends out his secret weapon, clones of Jean Grey lookalike Madelyne Pryor, more than sparks are going to fly in this AvX conflict!

RYLEY’S PICKS

CAPTAIN MARVEL #1
Carol Danvers returns to a starring role in this new series where she takes on the mantle of Captain Marvel! With the creative team of Kelly Sue Deconnick and Dexter Soy it’s sure to both be a great read and look incredible, but above all else it’s just great to see Carol Danvers back in the limelight.

DAREDEVIL #15
I’m just too much of a fanboy of Mark Waid’s Daredevil run to ever NOT have it in my top five for a week. Last month left us with a cliffhanger that I’m really anticipating seeing resolved… and basically here we get to see how well Matt does when he’s lost all his senses… while stuck in Latveria.

SAGA #5
Much like Daredevil, Saga is one I will constantly have as a top five picks because BKV’s epic sci-fi tale has never disappointed for a single page. I’m utterly in love with the story thus far and Fiona Staples artwork just makes it even better. If you aren’t reading this series yet then I suggest jumping on ASAP.

UNCANNY X-MEN #16
I’m a sucker for Daniel Acuna’s art, so I’d be loving this regardless, but after the events of the last issue I’m really anticipating seeing where Gillen’s going with this arc. It’s the Phoenix Five against Mister Sinister and his Sinister army, and I have the feeling it’s just going to be plain awesome.

WONDER WOMAN #11
Last issue wrapped up the story with Hades in a way I thought was simply beautifully played out, and this issue moves forth into the next stage of the series as Apollo comes back into play and Zola goes into labor. Obviously, things aren’t slowing down for Diana, and with Cliff Chiang back on interiors it means neither is the quality.

- INVINCIBLE IRON MAN #521

SAM’S PICKS

DAREDEVIL #15
Things aren’t looking too good for the Man Without Fear right now. After all, Matt is still a captive of Doctor Doom in Latveria, and ‘ol hornhead has been subjected to an experimental process which deprives people of their senses. Utterly helpless, Daredevil is at the mercy of Doom – and that is never a good place to be!
Meanwhile back in New York, Foggy continues his investigation into the true mental state of his friend, and I doubt that he’ll like what he finds! The Eisner award winning series continues – don’t miss out!

FANTASTIC FOUR #608
The Fantastic Four and Future Foundation are in Wakanda, and that usually is a sign of something big about to happen. An ancient threat is looming over Wakanda, where reanimated corpses have been stirred into attacking at an ever increasing rate. Despite being a man of science, Reed will have to place his faith in T’Challa and the Panther God in order to help resolve this ancient conflict! Apparently this is a big issue for the Black Panther, so fans of the character should definitely check this one out.

GREEN LANTERN CORPS #11
The final part of “Alpha War”! John Stewart has been declared guilty, and sentenced to death, but Guy Gardner and his fellow Lanterns aren’t ready to let ‘justice’ take its course! With the Alpha Lanterns depowering the dissenting Lanterns, they may struggle to save themselves from the wrath of the Alpha Lanterns however! The build up to the “Third Army” continues here!

JOURNEY INTO MYSTERY #641
I jumped on this series after Fear Itself, and so far, I’ve loved every issue I’ve read. Loki’s journey to the Otherworld concludes this issue, with the trickster scheming to bring peace to land, settling an ages old dispute between the Gods of the realm. How will Loki bring peace? And just what does Hela need the Holy Grail for? Only one way to find out – buy this comic!

UNCANNY X-MEN #16
The Phoenix Five have decided the world would be a better place without Sinister in it – just like Mr Sinister predicted! The mad scientist has been planning for this eventuality for a long time, right down to having a set of Madelyne Pryor clones to tempt the Phoenix force away from Cyclops’s X-Men! How will the chaos unfold in Sinister London? And just what will Magneto and the rest of the benched X-Men do?
This should be a terrifically insane read, with this title returning well and truly to form in this latest AvX tie-in!
