Manga Review: Medaka Box - 155

“Delete Shiratori” definitely wasn’t something easy to explain in this dialogue heavy chapter.
——

Following Medaka’s agreement to participate in a four-way game to bring an end to this jet black wedding feast, Medaka makes her selection for which two hostages she will get the immediate release of. She chooses both Anshin’in and Hanten, the two Not Equals. Now it’s on to the explanation of the game, “Delete Shiratori”.
First off, Anshin’in makes her glorious return to the battlefield in typical fashion, wishing to fully utilize her 10 quadrillion skills at once. This provides the most comic relief of the chapter and helps ease readers into the very long and detailed explanation of exactly what will go down in “Delete Shiratori.”

Once again, the suitors for the Jet Black Wedding Feast implement the use of language in their battle against Medaka and her friends, and this time around, it comes in the form of a variation of the word game, “Shiratori”. For those unfamiliar, shiratori is a game in which a person says a word to another participant who must think of a word using the last syllable used in the previous word. The version that Momozono proposes has the addition of eliminating syllables that wind up in use during the game.
This part of the chapter leaves much to be desired who aren’t familiar with the Japanese language. The chapter does its utmost best to make things as understandable and cohesive as possible within the given allotment of pages. Though spotty at times, I did get the gist of the game. Medaka does act as a proxy for the audience at times asking for specifics to which should help readers better understand the kind of game they’re about to play. This chapter, though, was all about setting up the action — if it’s safe to call it that — in the coming chapter so there is a lot of reading to get through. A few more precautions are taken by each side with Medaka determining the level of difficulty for the match. It remains to be seen how it will play out and just how fearsome the remaining three suitors are, but it should be entertaining nonetheless.

Chapter 155 does end on an interesting high note with Momozono upping the stakes with a wager. Depending on who loses, Momozono will either lose her tongue or Medaka will be forced to gouge out her eyes. This could lead to an unexpected conclusion, though with the abilities of the recently freed Kumagawa and Anshin’in, any negative outcome is sure to be negated.
GO Rating: 3/5

The three remaining suitors stand as mysterious and ominous adversaries for Medaka-Chan.
