Anime Review: Jinrui wa Suitai Shimashita - 5

It seems like no matter what, Mediator is doomed to fall twenty stories.
——

I was certain that the Fairies’ weakness would have had to be a major toothache after consuming all the sweets that Mediator feeds them. Then again, since they permanently have those smiley faces and have never shown any signs of any teeth, I should have figured out that the next candidate for Fairy weaknesses to be electromagnetic waves. Because it’s just that obvious.
It did throw me off that Mediator had no knowledge of the Human Monument Project and was introducing herself to that factory manager. After finding out that this arc is set before the factory and manga arcs, it made much more sense, but I’m slightly annoyed now that I know material is jumping around. Of course, all that could be alleviated if the next episode can somehow spot that, like allude to why she cut her hair short.

While there wasn’t much of any satire being thrown around, the episode did confirm just how crucial the Fairies are to the current human establishment. In what seems to be the role of a good luck charm, these little smiling people determine just how someone like Mediator can survive falling from a twenty-story building, survive a point-blank gunshot and defeat your rival in a fight. They spent a good amount of time writing a manual explaining the system for encountering Fairies and their rewards, or lack thereof. It’s a neat little currency for luck and I’d sure like to see that realized by the end of this arc.

As far as the Fairies’ fear of electromagnetic waves go, I see that as slightly bogus after seeing how they more or less don’t want to deal with those slimy blobs that use electricity for energy. I could be very wrong on that but at this point, I’m convinced that’s the real reason for their fleeing, and why humans will decline even more thanks to slimes that can eat through anything they please. That and without the Fairies’ luck.

On top of what the problem is with EM waves, there is one new character that needs a bit figuring out. Pion (Mizuki Nana), as she calls herself, is a bit of an enigma and has actual cat-ears that Mediator reacts to as her usual observant tendencies. On top of that, she can beat down on a robotic dog (wanna play?) and really leave an impression after that. I’m starting to think that she is that rival the Fairies have predicted for Mediator. All that remains is a point-blank shot, and maybe that can explain the hair.
