The Weekly Pull List: 08/08/12

Hello and welcome to the latest edition of the Weekly Pull List!
Every week I team up with fellow comics contributors Chris (littleyellowboxes) and Ryley (ryley-stbatman) to go through the week’s releases and spotlight our five most anticipated comics from our Pull Lists.
Have you folks recovered from the start of “Rotworld”, the epic crossover between Animal Man and Swamp Thing? Good, because this week Marvel has a rather significant story of their own beginning - for the next few issues, “Everything Burns” in The Mighty Thor and Journey into Mystery!
Curious to see what made our top fives this week? Then read on!

CHRIS’S PICKS

DEMON KNIGHTS #12
The Knights find themselves in the clutches of Morgaine Le Fey! Despite having King Arthur at their side, Madame Xanadu’s villainous sister has them exactly where she wants them. And Etrigan’s scheming means trouble for everyone as Lucifer comes a’ calling…

THE MIGHTY THOR #18
In the first part of the “Everything Burns” crossover, Thor and Loki cross paths as a secret from deep in Asgard’s past is revealed, sparking a new Aesir/Vanir war! Meanwhile, Surtur’s plans bubble along in the background, and the fire demon can only spell more trouble for our heroes.

SPIDER-MEN #4
Peter Parker visits Ultimate Aunt May and Gwen Stacy, whilst Miles Morales deals with the aftermath of their battle with Mysterio. Who, as it happens, isn’t quite finished yet. The Spider-Men will have to put aside their differences to sort out this dimension-hopping menace, whether they want to or not!

VENOM #22
In Rick Remender’s final issue on the title, Venom is out for vengeance against the final member of the Savage Six - the Jack O’Lantern is firmly in his sights, and Flash is going to stop at nothing to give him exactly what he deserves. But will the Secret Avengers, whom Flash spilt all his secrets to last issue, let him get away with it?

X-FACTOR VOL. 14: SUPER UNNATURAL TP
Collects: X-Factor (1986) #224.1, #225-228
A string of murders committed by a homicidal hangman draws X-Factor Investigations into their strangest case next, as demons and devils nip at their heels. And as the team draws in closer to the fiendish Hangman behind the killings, one of the team will fall victim to his thirst for blood!

RYLEY’S PICKS

BATMAN #12
After the epic “Court of Owls” finished last month we get a bit of an epilogue here that also acts as a lead-in to the next major arc of the series, “Death of the Family”, where we’ll get to see the return of the Joker. But the real draw for this issue is the fact that the amazing Becky Cloonan is handling the interiors. Not only is she an incredible artist, but she also happens to be the first female artist to ever draw interiors for either Batman or Detective Comics!

INCREDIBLE HULK #12
“Stay Angry” ends here, and it’s sure to be an epic conclusion as we see Hulk go face to face with both Wolverine and the Thing! The other issues in this arc have ranged in quality, but hopefully this conclusion can wrap it all up with a great narrative conclusion to lead into the final arc of Jason Aaron’s short run with the Jade Giant.

THE MIGHTY THOR #18
I haven’t been buying Matt Fraction’s Mighty Thor for almost a year now, but I’m jumping back on now because for the next few months this series and Journey into Mystery will be crossing over for “Everything Burns”! The crossover seems like it’ll mostly be tying up all the plotlines from JiM, so fans of Gillens praised series can’t miss this crossover!

VENOM #22
Rick Remender closes off his run on Venom in this issue, and I’m really pumped to see what he’s got in store. Since issue #1 this title has been incredibly fun and has put forth tons of great character work for not only Flash Thompson, but also for the villains he’s been put up against.

SCOTT PILGRIM VOL. 1: SCOTT PILGRIM’S PRECIOUS LITTLE LIFE - COLOR EDITION
The hit indie series begins its color re-release starting this month, and I have to say that fans of the series and of the movie should really check this out. Often colored versions of black and white titles wind up looking pretty haphazardly done, or the colors just don’t look right, but the work that Nathan Fairbairn’s put into this book looks quite incredible.

- DEMON KNIGHTS #12
- FANTASTIC FOUR #609
- FRANKENSTEIN: AGENT OF S.H.A.D.E. #12

SAM’S PICKS

BATMAN #12
“Night of the Owls” may have ended, but I don’t expect this title to stop being excellent any time soon. This issue apparently serves as an epilogue to the “Night of the Owls” storyline, whilst also setting up the next major storyline, which involves a certain Clown Prince of Crime I believe…
Anyway, this issue also promises to flesh out the backstory around Harper Row a bit more, the girl last seen fishing Batman out of a watery demise in #7, who apparently has a longstanding relationship with the Dark Knight. This definitely looks like it’ll be a great issue, so don’t miss out!

CAPTAIN AMERICA #16
Things aren’t going too great for Cap at the moment. His war against Hydra is still wearing on, with it having claimed the sanity and life of one of his old friends a couple of issues ago. Now he’s up against a press smear campaign, led presumably by a Hydra imposter, whilst he faces a seemingly impossible invasion force in Washington, who out-power him tenfold. Like I said, things aren’t going well at the moment…

FRANKENSTEIN: AGENT OF S.H.A.D.E. #12
Jeff Lemire may have handed over the writing reins to Matt Kindt, but that doesn’t mean that this title has lessened in quality at all. The sheer madness of this title has continued, and if anything has increased over the last few issues, as Frankenstein tries to take down Satan’s Ring! And well, he certainly learned some shocking things last issue. Fans of this series are in for a real treat this issue again – with even more being set to be revealed about S.H.A.D..E.!

THE MIGHTY THOR #18
I’m jumping on this title due to the crossover with the always excellent Journey into Mystery, and based off the information we’ve been given so far, as well as the ending to the last issue of Journey into Mystery – this is going to be an epic storyline. I’m really looking forward to seeing Thor and Loki cross paths again, and just what is this dark secret to be revealed?

SPIDER-MEN #4
I wasn’t going to buy this originally, but after the reaction to #1, I just had to check it out. This mini-series has delivered some really great moments so far – none more so than Peter’s search for the truth last issue, which led him to the home of Ultimate Aunt May and Gwen Stacy! I can’t wait to see what happens next.
SAM IS ALSO PICKING UP…
- 2000 AD PROG 1795
- DEMON KNIGHTS #12
