Comic Review: Wonder Woman #12

It’s the ultimate showdown as Diana heads to Olympus where she goes head-to-head with Apollo, Artemis and Hera. All this while Zola’s going into labor? Just another day in the life of Diana Prince, right? Either way, Azzarello closes the first year of this series with a bang… or should I say a boom?

Brian Azzarello would never have been my first guess as to who should have been writing a Wonder Woman book a year ago, but here we are one year into the New 52 and he’s still writing one of the strongest titles on the shelves. Consistently, this series delivers great character-work, fantastic stories, and some of the most beautiful artwork you’ll see in comics. This issue Azzarello somehow ups the ante once again.
Aside from the mass amounts of action I expected from this issue, there were many unexpected plot twists and turns that prove that not all is as it seems and that Azzarello and company still have plenty of material up their sleeves for the future of this title. Many of the plot lines that have been happening since issue one come to a head here, but that in no means makes this a conclusion; it just feels like the close of Act 1, and Act 2 is looking to be twice as grand.
There’s nothing more I could say about Cliff Chiang’s artwork that hasn’t been said before, but he really continues to show that he’s one of the greatest talents in the biz right now. Each character is unique and expressive and not a single panel is anything less than a work of art.
As said, this issue closes off the first year of stories effectively, but there’s an enormous reveal at the end of the issue that’ll fuel any DC fan’s interest in what is to come. Let’s just say there are plenty of “Kirby Krackles” to look forward to in the future, as Azzarello is setting the stage for the use of some characters I’ve been patiently awaiting to arrive in DC’s New 52.
