The Weekly Pull List: 08/22/12

Hello and welcome to the latest edition of the Weekly Pull List!

Every week I team up with fellow comics contributors Chris (littleyellowboxes) and Ryley (ryley-stbatman) and we go through the week’s releases and spotlight our five most anticipated comics from our Pull Lists.

This week marks a 50th anniversary for everyone’s favourite wall-crawler, and you are all invited! Amazing Spider-Man #692 hits the shelves this week, being an over-sized celebratory issue about Spider-Man’s exploits over the last 50 years.

Curious to see what else we picked? Then read on!

CHRIS’S PICKS

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #692

Our 50th Anniversary issue is here, as “Alpha” begins. On an innocent high school field trip, mild mannered Peter Pa-I mean, Andy Maguire, gains super powers, and now it’s up to Spider-Man to look after him, as Spidey gains a sidekick! Also featuring celebratory stories from various other writers and artists to mark the occasion, and some gorgeous variant covers.

THE FLASH #12

She’s been hanging around behind the scenes for the past few issues, but now it’s time for Glider to take centre stage, as Captain Cold’s enigmatic sister makes her plans known, and they definitely don’t spell good news for the Flash.

GREEN LANTERN: NEW GUARDIANS #12

With Sayd revealed as the instigator of the formation of the New Guardians, Larfleeze is furious. But his rage will have to wait, because Invictus is coming to play. And by play, I mean destroy the entire Vega System and murder ‘fleeze. Good times. The only ones in his way are our New Guardians, so it’s an all out battle royale!

I,VAMPIRE #12

With the Hellsing’s Zombie Vampire Vampire Hunters reinforced with more zombies from a nearby town, Andrew’s at his wits end. With Mary, Tig, and Professor Troughton at his side, he needs to stop the zombie vampire plague in its tracks. But here comes another complication - Enter Stormwatch!

VENOM #23

Taking things in a completely new direction, Venom finds himself battling the Department of Occult Armaments, headed by turncoat Daimon Hellstrom. When his past exploits in hell during the Circle of Four come back to haunt him, plus the pain of the recent Savage Six fallout, will Venom fall to the Monsters of Evil?

RYLEY’S PICKS

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #692

Spidey gets himself a sidekick?! For fifty years Spidey’s been fighting crime all alone, but it looks like that’s about to change as Dan Slott and Humberto Ramos introduce Alpha. Dan Slott’s run on ASM has been exciting to say the least, and I’m sure there are some plans up his sleeves in this new character reveal, and I’m sure he has a role to play in the events that lead up to the 700th issue!

PROPHET VOL. 1: REMISSION TP

I’ve been hearing tons of awesome stuff about Brandon Graham’s reboot of Prophet, and now I’ll finally get to check out this sci-fi goodness first hand. Fans of Brandon Graham will definitely find a lot to love here, and the fact that he’s joined by a cavalcade of great artists makes this all the more enticing.

SCAPLED #60

Not secretly, I’m a huge fan of Jason Aaron (I pride myself on owning everything he’s written), and his Vertigo series, Scalped, is probably the greatest thing the writer has produced, and now it’s coming to an end. It’s been a long road, but it’s time for the conclusion we’ve been waiting for, and after reading the first 59 issues I have to say that this finale should be extremely satisfying. If you haven’t been reading the series yet you really need to get on it, as Scalped is one of the best titles on the shelves.

SECRET AVENGERS #30

Rick Remender never seems to disappoint, and after the first issue of this arc of Secret Avengers I’m convinced we’re in for an awesome story. Especially seeing that we’re about to have Venom go head to head with Taskmaster. Oh yeah, that’s going to be incredible.

SWAMP THING VOL. 1: RAISE THEM BONES TP

Scott Snyder’s Swamp Thing series has definitely been one of the best titles of the DC New 52, and if you haven’t read into it yet this is your chance. Volume one contains the first seven issues of the acclaimed series and tells the story of Alec Holland returning to the identity of the Swamp Thing to protect the world from the forces of The Rot. Fans who picked up the first volume of Animal Man a few months ago owe it to themselves to grab this one as well.

RYLEY IS ALSO PICKING UP…

- THE FLASH #12

- I, VAMPIRE #12

- INVINCIBLE IRON MAN #523

- JUSTICE LEAGUE DARK #12

SAM’S PICKS

2000 AD PROG 1797

Another week, another installment of crazy action from 2000 AD! A new story for Judge Dredd begins, but more importantly, we get the continuation of Aquila, as the warrior seeks to discover the truth about his being from the mysterious Spartan, whilst chaos ensues all around them! Also, Lenny Zero’s great heist continues, and Ichabod Azrael’s quest to be reunited with his love and save all of reality as we know it steps up a gear…

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #692

I hope you are feeling in a celebratory mood, as it’s the 50th anniversary of Spider-Man this month! To celebrate in style, the web-slinger has been given an over-sized issue for #692, featuring an all new take on the origin story all these years later, with things coming full circle, as we meet Alpha!

THE FLASH #12

We’ve been teased the Rogues for a while now, with the Flash meeting a new member of the soon-to-be team each month. This month – meet the Glider! Just who is the Glider, and why will be she so central to the formation of the Rogues? I don’t know, but I’m sure Manapul and Buccellato are dying to tell us, so make sure you don’t miss this issue!

GREEN LANTERN: NEW GUARDIANS #12

Last issue saw the New Guardians finally confront Larfleeze over the ring theft, only to find out his ignorance, when the true culprit stepped forward! So, what next for the Guardians? Well, probably avoiding the imminent destruction of the Vega system and themselves at the hands of Invictus could be a good place to start!

UNCANNY X-MEN #17

This title has really stepped up a notch during AvX since Sinster’s return, and it all ends here! Just what else does the mad scientist have planned for Cylcops and the X-Men, as Sinister begins his endgame, with months of planning about to be realized. With someone as insane as Sinister, you can never guess, but you do know one thing – it won’t be good for the X-Men!
