Manga Review: Tonari no Kaibutsu-kun - 32

A summer camping trip to remember.
——
Shizuku finally gets out of summer school and the group of friends head off to a camping trip organized by Iyo. She still has interest in Haru, but he says he isn’t interested because she looks like Yamaken. The group soon discovers that Yamaken is living in the cabin next to their tents and things are still awkward between him and Shizuku. Haru tells Shizuku that she gives up on things like her friendship with Yamaken too easily. Shizuku invites Yamaken to dinner and their relationship seems to improve. It turns out that Haru was listening the whole time and he and Yamaken start a fight once again that is discovered at the end of the chapter by Sasayan and Natsume as they collect firewood.
This chapter has some nice moments between Shizuku and Haru, including his maturity over her loss of a friendship with Yamaken and their close encounter with “uncomfortable touching.” I’m a bit disappointed that Haru still has to mess with Yamaken, but the other boy is giving him plenty of excuses. They really need to stop fighting over Shizuku before she gets upset. I also loved the little moment where Sasayan asked Natsume if she still liked the store manager. We didn’t get an answer, but I hope he was asking because he likes Natsume. If not, it is still kind for him to want to comfort her. Sasayan is one of the most underused characters, but he really deserves a lot of credit for being a great guy.

I’m looking forward to hopefully seeing a change between Yamaken and Haru, as well as more of the couple moments with Haru and Shizuku. I also hope that Natsume is getting closer to being okay and that Sasayan can help her. Hopefully, he gets more panels soon because I really enjoy seeing him interact with everyone.

Hopefully, the next chapter contains some more plot changes because this one was pretty slow. I want this relaxing summer to heat up with excitement. We could use some of that before the infamous study bug gets back to her old habits.
