How would you like this pairing to be official? This says it all.
All things considered, this isn’t so bad. I expected Hyouka to just focus on Houtarou and Eru, though I didn’t expect it to be just the two of them. The credits at the end seem awfully lonely with them narrating the entire case of Student X. Still, it’s another one and done that ends up showing just how scarily accurate Houtarou is with his reasonings and deductions, even if his sole purpose was originally to simply create a theory out of the near impossible. Of course, when Eru is around, details are necessary, which he so kindly provides.
To be honest, however, no matter how convincing the case is and how it went from potentially thievery to counterfeiting (and throwing in some cultural rules), it kind of lacked flavor. It’s hard to put it when I’m already half distracted with personal endeavors and whatnot but just having Houtarou and Eru means a lack of jabs and comebacks. Hey, I actually missed Satoshi in this episode.
That isn’t to take away from the two leads though. I think this recent exchange shows a new side to each one of them, both of which being different: Houtarou being ambitious and Eru being pouty. Seriously, Eru with that pouting face is the new moe expression of the series. I’ve been missing this for the longest time, even when I already thought of her as freakin’ earnestly cute. But even that couldn’t compare to the deeply implied romance between the two. Hey, nothing’s going to happen on New Year’s, right? (Pfft, Houtarou on a date? No way…)
If I had to compare to last week’s episode, it isn’t as strong, though it does bring the two closer to one another. It seems like Houtarou is now more than willing to accommodate for Eru’s curiosity and she’s been waiting for this chance to work with him from beginning to end. It still feels like she’s being a bit pushy and demanding for answers that are normally hard to derive, but I can see the effort she puts in to solve a case, no matter the difficulty. I’d like to see what happens on New Year’s at the shrine and beyond, and what kind of curiosity will strike her mind.
GO Rating: 3/5
Ask Houtarou out? Success! (Only in Eru’s way, though.)
