Anime Review: Mobile Suit Gundam AGE - 45

It’s a battle of David vs. Goliath as Zeheart’s Leigilis squares off against the EXA-DB’s SID the Destroyer.
——

With the existence of SID the destroyer confirmed, the location of the EXA-DB is close at hand as Zeheart and Asemu close in on it. Episode forty-five ends up becoming an episode solely focused on both Zeheart and Asemu as the Federation Forces under Flit rally at Nortrum for their assault on LaGramis. The first half of this episode purely depicts the capabilities and strengths of SID as even Zeheart, with his newly acquired Leigilis, prove no match against the full might of a machine developed by the EXA-DB. We’re also treated to a short flashback of Asemu’s own experience fighting off SID, as it is revealed that it was SID who left Asemu for dead years earlier when he went missing investigating a derelict ship. The AGE-2 he was piloting at the time was simply over matched to the point where Asemu couldn’t even put up a fight.

Despite that, it’s a given that Asemu would join Zeheart in his fight piloting his Dark Hound against SID. This winds up being an interesting direction to lead this episode into as we see that Zeheart has fully succumbed to his fanaticism for Ezelcant despite Asemu’s warning of what Project Eden truly meant. Zeheart no longer resembles the honourable character he was portrayed to be in the episodes leading up to this, and we will see if the man who cared so much for his comrades remains when he comes to the realization that he will have to sacrifice those men he cared so much for. Knowing the eventuality of what his decision to become Ezelcant’s successor means will be a point to look forward to, as it will either push Zeheart over the edge of being a fully fledged villain or a man looking for redemption for his sins.

However, in the mean time, Asemu—still with his firm belief that he and Zeheart are still friends—aids him in his fight against SID where the two are able to subdue the behemoth of a mobile suit. The two eventually discover the location of the EXA-DB, but Asemu orders the destruction of it and though it appears destroyed, the episode ends off on a teaser that both SID and the EXA-DB survived the assault, but who will discover it and how it will affect the war remain to be seen.
Overall, episode forty-five of Gundam Age is an interesting watch, and though the first half of the episode is all action, it does feature some recycled animation and just a lack of imagination in its concept. Still a good episode though.
