The big six double oh and what a disappointment it was!
Part of the disappointment of this chapter just stemmed in part from residual feelings of displeasure at the previous chapter. Going back for a moment, the previous chapter showed that all throughout the time of Obito, Rin, and Kakashi, that Rin was implicated much in Obito’s life. The dialogue-less flashbacks seemed to show that she interacted with him and potentially became more than a friend to him. Laying on his death bed, he seemed to silent telegraph to Kakashi that he must protect Rin at all costs. Somehow, as this chapter showed, Kakashi was unfortunately unable to carry out that wish, and therefore led Obito on this path of vengeance on the Ninja world.
Unfortunately, I dislike that rationale for all the things that he has done. If we analyze the entire plot of Naruto Shippuden and how Masked Man/Tobi/Obito was pulling all the strings in the background, it just seems that this plan for the Infinite Tsukyomi, the near destruction of the Hidden Leaf by Pain, and other transgressions, do not really fit as being worthwhile milestones in the context of “Rin’s death.” If he was worried about that, wouldn’t it make more sense to target the specific individuals involved, not just countless third parties across numerous regions? I think it would have turned out better if she were established as important earlier on in the story, had some dialogue, and well if she was only one portion of how he felt that the ninja world should pay for some misdeed.
The shining moment of the chapter was actually the ending when Madara showed up. Madara works better as an antagonist. He has been established from before the current generation of Ninja were around as a force that was one to be reckoned with. He displayed high levels of talent, had actual motives that fit in with his misdeeds, and isn’t only after vengeance. Regardless, this sets up for some interesting fighting possibilities in the future.
Will Naruto have to team up with a yet to arrive, Sasuke, to take down both Madara and Obito? Will Madara destroy Obito then carry out his own plan? Will Kakashi and Obito die in each other’s arms as they fight with such passion, that they are able to understand each other and rekindle their friendship? Hopefully as we go through the next hundred or so chapters, there is much to be excited about.
