Microsoft Patent Is Fully Immersive

Immersion into the video game world is a challenging task for console makers and developers. The line between the television’s edge and your imagination may start to bleed together, potentially, from the latest patent from Microsoft. This device would essentially be a 360 degree projector that displays images on four walls while a game is being played.

——

This would give developers a new range of vision for gamers to incorporate into their gameplay styles. Say, for instance, you were playing a survival horror game and heard a sound behind you (assuming you’re using a 5.1 sound system), you literally turn around to see a creeping ghoul and turn the game controller to meet your new adversary.

While the possibilities of this technology are thrilling, it remains only as a patent for the time being. However, given the success of the Kinect and desire to keep a leg up on competition in the social, browser, and mobile world, who knows? All I can say if they do an HD remake of Duck Hunt, I’m scared stiff for what or who lurks behind me.
