Manga Review: Fairy Tail - 300 & 301

After the thrilling conclusion to the biggest fight in Fairy Tail manga history and a few weeks of side stories, the plot deepened as we learned about the history of the Dragons.

——

Sting was punished harshly for his actions with Fairy Tail. It was unfair and brutal for Lester to be vaporized before his eyes for being weak. This was one of those moments where Mashima managed to stimulate hate and discomfort in the reader. It worked well, for the whole scene was so emotional and dramatic. With the rule in the guild being one where if you lose, then you are kicked out, it is a wonder why people keep joining. Fortunately, Sting did not need to rely on outside help and took action into his own hands. The leader of the guild was swiftly put out of commission.

With that taking place outside with those not affiliated with Fairy Tail, Mashima finally revealed the secret behind the dragons and Dragonslayer magic. It was a delightful tale, full of intrigue and opening the door for more questions. For example, how is Dragonslayer magic still proliferating if all the dragons left?

Through the Milky Way Technique, Zealconis’s, was summoned. This was a phenomenal moment as it was our second time seeing an actual dragon in Fairy Tail. The first time was with Acnologia at Tenrou Island. The dragon history was intriguing and could have been given a few more panels or even an entire chapter to cover it. Essentially, the dragons split into factions that wanted to live in peace with humans or not. Those aligned with peace taught some humans techniques that were harmful to dragons. Unfortunately, they were too powerful that they started to attack both good and bad dragons, driving them to take refuge in some unknown place.

Natsu, Gajeel, and Wendy were frightened by what they learned. If they use their magic too much, could they become dragons too? That wasn’t the case as the knights indicated at the end of the chapter. Were they on the good side or bad side? I think we need to hear more. Although they brought up some interesting theory with the Zeref causing the human to become Acnologia, is their goal to stop Zeref then? What will our protagonists do?

The two chapters were informative and great. It was a nice break from the action intense moments in the matches, and one that I hope doesn’t last too long. Seeing another dragon was great and I can only hope we see more.
