Anime Review: [First Impression] Btooom! - 1

Blowing stuff up? What isn’t there to love?
What if your virtual game of survival just got real?
——
With the first few seconds of BTOOOM! all you see are several explosions. I knew at once I would be hooked.
BTOOOM! is one of a few different series that caught my eye and, man, it is right up my alley. Ryōta Sakamoto, the protagonist, seems to be a bit of a self-absorbed loner who escapes his real life by spending most of his time in his online game (something I can totally relate to). The game is almost like Call of Duty. The catch is, the only weapon you have are bombs. Awesome!
The next thing you know, Ryōta Sakamoto wakes up on a beautiful island with no memory of anything. All he has is a bag that he found with some food and, yep, you guessed it, bombs. That is when everything sinks in for me. Call of Duty and Battle Royal/The Hunger Games had a baby and it is BTOOOM! If you are a fan of survival games and explosions, then you need to check out this anime.

Not all of the characters were introduced yet, but you can tell there are going to be many others just by watching the opening theme. There are three other characters that stood out to me in this episode. The first character was Ryōta Sakamoto’s mother. She seemed like a sweet woman and for some reason Ryōta Sakamoto was a jerk towards her (before he woke up on that island, anyway).

The second character was the first person that Ryōta Sakamoto encountered on the island. He came across as a, somewhat, rugged type of man and immediately started throwing his bombs. Needless to say, there was an action packed battle where Ryōta Sakamoto quickly learned to “kill or be killed”. He was going to do what he must if he wanted to live.

The third character was an attractive woman who’s name was not yet revealed. This woman mentioned that she was on the island because she was being punished, but for what?
That is the hint of mystery that will keep me watching this series. What is going on? What is going to happen next? How did they get there? Why are they all being punished? I will keep on watching, not only because of the fact that BTOOOM! is entertaining, but because it will keep me guessing. I need to know what happens next.
