Manga Review: Sengoku Youko

“‘Stop your evil deeds and take the right path!’ That is the creed of Youko Tama and her younger step brother, Jinka Sendou. The two demon siblings travel the country to stop the deeds of all evil doers, along with a scaredy cat swordsman they picked up along the way, Hyoudou Shinsuke. Their travels lie with many twists and turns, as well as wacky characters they’ll meet along the way.” -Mangafox.com

I have wanted to review this series for a long time but I never felt like I could do it justice. I think I have put off the task long enough that I need to at least take a crack at explaining why you should read this awesome manga. This manga has great action and a great plot. But what it is strongest in is character depth. As an extent of that, this manga has amazing character development. I am looking at Shinsuke especially when I say this, although Sendou also goes through some changes mentally. Shinsuke has changed the most from when he was introduced to the current point in the manga. He is now a completely different person than he was before. I would love to explain more and give you specifics but I am afraid that giving you anymore information will spoil the plot.
Action is also a strong point here. We get a lot of crazy intense battles often—but not too often—and we see a lot of super crazy strong characters duke it out to our immense satisfaction. Continuing off this, what I like is we get a mix of different types of power ups. We get power ups that occur in the middle of the battle, which keeps things exciting. But we also get some interesting and well done training resulting in power ups. I like seeing characters train and work hard for their power but this could get boring. Luckily, that is not the case here at all. Training is actually interesting!
I think the plot is the weakest element of the manga but that is only relative to the action and the character depth. In any other manga the plot would be a strong point. Although the plot may sound corny from the summary I provided. In actuality the plot is very well written. It holds all the manga’s elements together and creates a nice neat package for us readers to enjoy. The bottom line is that this manga is a must read.
