Anime Review: Magi - 2

Close. It’s like Aladdin, except green and more arms. Caterpie’s still better though.

There’s not much to say on this series, I realized. Never mind the fact that Magi is on chapter 146 at least, but there’s really nothing to speculate on. Or rather, there’s nothing big enough to speculate on, which I guess is a testament to how well the story has explained itself? If there aren’t any gaping holes that I, as the viewer, feel are unaddressed, then the show is doing its job telling me a story. How entertaining that story, we’ll have to see, but so far it’s been pretty good. With the exception of those green bug things, this show has some really appealing visuals which only makes it stronger.

I know this is stupid, but really: Morgiana is from the savannah? Which means she’s from somewhere in Africa? Which begs the question: why is she so white?! I just… it’s almost not a question of cultural or racial sensitivity anymore. How is she white? That’s just… I don’t even know. Of course, this is from a show where said character has ridiculously bright magenta hair so maybe I’m asking for too much.
And Jamil is one part douchebag, two parts idiot. I don’t feel like I have to elaborate more than that. He’s stupid, plain and simple. The perfect shonen villain, really; easy to hate and easy to understand. Why are so many manga/anime villains so simple? It’s a shame. Honestly, it seems like forever since I’ve seen a decent villain.

So, yeah. Still in the whole “sit-back-and-watch-for-now” mindset when it comes to Magi because there’s literally nothing else to do with this one. So sit back and watch, I guess.
