Anime Review: Robotics;Notes - 2

Kaito really loves his passion fruit steamed bun.

——

Now it starts getting interesting! While the first episode was a little lackluster, I think that episode two of Robotics;Notes picked up the pace without feeling rushed in the slightest bit. The episode manages to introduce some new characters, talk about an “accident,” and even spark the question, “Who is Aki’s older sister — Misaka Senomiya?”

As the episode starts, we get a glimpse of the relationship between Kaito and Aki’s relationship towards one another, and to be frank, it seems like a one sided relationship. Either its just me, or does it seem like Kaito is only around Aki not because he wants to, but because it seems like he has to be? Throughout the episode, I get the feeling that they are more like co-workers rather than friends. The way Kaito acts towards Aki is rather cold and empty, and even though he goes out of his way to help her, it still seems like he isn’t doing it because he wants to, but because he needs to.

The episode showcases Aki’s dedication to the Robotics Club and how dedicated she is to winning Robo-One. It’s truly adorable in my opinion, especially as Aki argues with the robotic parts salesman, Doc. Production I.G does a great job portraying each character’s personalities and this is rare, even today in most anime. I could just feel Aki’s determination, as if I were in the same Robotics Club, and Kaito, being described as an oddball throughout his school, really does feel like an oddball.

With all this talk of robots and this being a 5pb’s third Adventure Science Fiction, we are all probably wondering the same thing: where is the science fiction? Well do not fret comrades because as of episode two, I can safely say this anime is only going to get better. At the end of the episode, Aki has a strange spasm attack as a result of a mentioned accident. This sparks a lot of questions and certainly increases the hype for next week’s episode and the episodes to come.
