Anime Review: Robotics;Notes - 3

Is it me or do a lot of these “first boss” characters looks the same; bug-eyed and pig nosed…

——

Okay so today I’m here to review The Karate Kid  Robotics;Notes episode 3! It’s an episode that accomplishes a lot without feeling rushed at all. Even though the episode isn’t all that original and is quite predictable (I can see the ending!), at some points, it still managed to surprise me and keep me entertained. So without further ado, lets get on with the review!

Remember that scene in The Karate Kid where our hero entered a tournament, and on the final round he was faced with a huge disadvantage but prevailed in the end? Yeah, that basically happened in this week’s episode. With this basic concept implemented, this feels like any old cookie cutter episode. Halfway through, I could already tell our heroes will prevail and win the tournament; and I was right (kind of). Robotics;Notes managed to slip some surprises in there that really made the story more interesting and progressed the plot enough in one episode that it didn’t feel rushed. Kai and Aki still won the tournament, technically, but there was enough meat in this episode that, even though it was borderline simple, I still had a great time watching it.

For 25 minutes, this episode really packed a punch. We got to see a lot of footage of Aki’s sister, Misaki, who has a cloud of mystery surrounding her. Not only that, but we learn more about Kai and his struggle against his own body, and we meet Mr. Pleiades — the returning champion of the Robo-One Competition. Even at the last minute, this episode was able to give us a sneak peek of Kill Ballad’s creator Frau Kojiro. This episode was like a Wonder Ball. Remember that candy? It was just a bland, hollow chocolate ball on the outside, but on the inside were the colorful, sweet candy pieces in the shape of our favorite cartoon characters. Anyone remember that? Or am I just getting old?
