Disney will now have complete control of all of Lucasfilm’s assets, which includes LucasArts, Industrial Light & Magic, Skywalker Sound, the Indiana Jones franchise and, of course, the Star Wars franchise.
George Lucas, who is the founder and 100% owner of Lucasfilm, will receive about half of the $4.05 billion in cash, plus about $40 million in stock shares. He states:
“It’s now time for me to pass Star Wars on to a new generation of filmmakers. I’ve always believed that Star Wars could live beyond me, and I thought it was important to set up the transition during my lifetime.”
In addition to Episode 7, Episode 8 and 9 are also in the works and will definitely be released in the future. Disney CEO Bob Iger announced in a conference call that the plan is to release a Star Wars film every 2 or 3 years.
