Anime Review: Tonari No Kaibutsu-kun - 5

Donuts, candy, pixie sticks; whatever you got this Halloween, let’s all get cavities together.

——

What a rough week it has been. Preparing for Halloween has never been more exhausting. Well, now that all the festivities are out of the way, we can finally relax and feast on our mounds of candy that we worked so hard to get. No more ghouls and monsters, and the blood-curdling screams have ended, so let’s talk about something happy and cheerful to brighten the mood. Episode five of Tonari No Kaibutsu-kun will surely be full of giggles and cutesy moments.

Sorry to get your hopes up, but I lied. This week on Tonari No Kaibutsu-kun, we take a break from all the romance to address more serious topics. Yeah, I was pretty bummed about this episode as it wasn’t as cheerful and fun as the others; not to say that it is a bad episode or anything, but it was pretty straightforward. It shed a little bit of light on Haru’s brother complex with Yuzan. None of Haru’s crazy antics were present, so the episode was just a tad bit boring, but it did manage to create tension between the characters.

By the end of the episode, it was easy to tell that the characters were definitely having some turmoil. It was good to see this series in a serious light, but soon afterwards, that tension was quickly switched to a more romantic atmosphere. Other than that, this episode was really straightforward and advanced the plot. We got to see more of what kind of character Yuzan is, and again, we see more character development in Shizuku. Now enough reading; go eat your candy till your teeth rot.

We will all be wearing masks to hide our disgusting teeth after this Halloween.
