The Weekly Pull List: 11/07/12

Hello, and welcome to the latest edition of the Weekly Pull List!
Every week I team up with fellow comics contributors Chris (lokiallthefucksigive) and Ryley (ryley-stbatman) as we go through the week’s releases and spotlight our five most anticipated comics from our Pull Lists.
Big things are happening this week (no, not the election), with Marvel NOW! seeing the first issues of Deadpool and Iron Man hit the shelves! Not to be outdone, we also have the next chapters of the epic “Rotworld” saga over in Animal Man and Swamp Thing from DC!
So what made our picks this week? Read on to find out!

CHRIS’S PICKS

AVENGERS ACADEMY #39
The Academy closes its doors in this final issue extravaganza, as Finesse, Veil, Hazmat, Mettle, Striker, White Tiger, Reptil, Lightspeed, X-23, and all of the other members of the Avengers Academy come to the end of their adventures. Who graduates? Who heads down a dark path? Find out here, as the kids confront their teachers about the secret they discovered way back in issue #1.

AVX: CONSEQUENCES #5
An issue ago, Scott Summers told Magneto to leave him in prison. Now, he’s changed his mind, and it’s jailbreak time. Magneto, Danger, and Magik are on their way in, and Scott isn’t sitting around anymore. But will Scott leave Emma Frost to languish in prison?

DEADPOOL #1
Deadpool takes Marvel NOW! by storm, as he stars in his own ongoing series once again. In his first adventure, the Merc with a Mouth finds himself battling long dead presidents, as their ghosts rise from the grave and Deadpool is the only one who can stop them. God help us all.

EARTH 2 #6
It’s the final battle between the Green and the Grey, and Alan Scott is our front line. But the Grey’s promise to resurrect Alan’s true love might be able to sway him into making a poor decision and dooming the planet. And in the aftermath of the battle, will Earth 2’s heroes create a new super team in the wake of the Trinity? Oh, and what’s Terry Sloan up to?

IRON MAN #1
Extremis. The virus that allows Tony Stark complete control of almost all machinery, including his state of the art armour. But when Extremis is stolen, Tony is the only one who can get it back — and the consequences if he doesn’t are too dire to contemplate. Iron Man enters Marvel NOW! with a bang!

RYLEY’S PICKS

AVENGERS VS. X-MEN HC
I really just want to recommend this one because it’s the perfect point for new readers to jump onto the event that has brought the Marvel Universe to where it is now. This oversized hardcover collects the entire 12-issue series plus issue #0, the infinite comics digital issues, and all six issues of the AvX VS mini. If you’re at all curious how the Marvel U got to how it is now then this is the book to grab.

DEADPOOL #1
I’ve been getting my ‘pool fix from Remender’s Uncanny X-Force as of late because honestly Dan Way’s Deadpool series just became nigh unreadable so with UXF ending soon hopefully this title can give me a good place for a fusion of comedy and action. I’ve never read comics by Gerry Duggan or Brian Posehn before but Tony Moore’s artwork is superb and seems perfect for the character. I’ve got high hopes for this series so far.

IRON MAN #1
Kieron Gillen has yet to have really disappointed me in anything he’s written, and while following up Matt Fraction’s run with the Armored Avenger is going to be quite difficult to do I know Gillen’s got some interesting ideas in store. I’m not the biggest fan of Greg Land’s artwork, but from the previews it looks like his style lends itself well to the armor itself, which is pretty important.

SWEET TOOTH #39
Jeff Lemire’s wonderful series reaches it’s penultimate issue here. I’ve been following Sweet Tooth since the very beginning, and I know that with time this will go down to be one of Vertigo’s classics. It’s an incredible story with artwork to match, and any comics fan should read it. All said, I’m sure that this issue is going to be one that really pulls on the heartstrings, and I’m not quite sure I’m ready for it.

UNCANNY X-FORCE #33
As we get closer and closer to the end of this series it’s all really bittersweet for me. I hate to see my favorite Marvel book go, but I’m excited to see how it ends. Remender’s been constructing one of the most interesting and intense series I’ve read in a while and it’ll be sad to see it go. Luckily Rick will be following this up with his Uncanny Avengers title, so there’s not too much to worry about.

SAM’S PICKS

DEADPOOL #1
Marvel NOW! is here, and that means so is the new creative team for Deadpool! After meandering about somewhat in his previous series, this relaunch looks set to once again have a clear direction for where its going. And with Posehn and Duggan at the helm, this should still be a funny read — especially considering the first arc sets Wade up against a bunch of dead Presidents…

GREEN LANTERN #14
“Rise of the Third Army” continues! With Hal Jordan missing, the Justice League have taken to investigate just who this mysterious individual is, flying around with a Green Lantern ring. Simon Baz meets the Justice League - and it presumably isn’t going to go well!

IRON MAN #1
Ever since this title was announced, I have really been looking forward to it. Kieron Gillen did wonderful things with Loki over onJourney into Mystery, so I’m excited to see just what his take on Tony Stark will be. And from the new suit displayed on the cover, it looks like along with Greg Land, he will be doing some bold things on this title, as Tony looks to once again, rein in an invention gone horribly wrong!

SWAMP THING #14
Swamp Thing’s journey in “Rotworld: The Green Kingdom” continues! Last issue we learnt just how dire things have got in the year absence of our heroes — especially for Alec, who hasn’t yet realized that Abby was among the first to perish in the Rot’s opening onslaught!
However, finding that out is the least of his problems at the moment — first he needs to see off the Rot’s attack on the lost stronghold of the Green!

TRANSFORMERS: REGENERATION ONE #85
One will fall! Optimus Prime has finally arrived on the decimated planet once known as Earth, and things are set for a climatic confrontation with Megatron! Not much else has been given away about this issue — just that this will be the final clash between the two legendary Transformers…
SAM IS ALSO PICKING UP…
- 2000 AD PROG 1808
- ACTION COMICS #14
- ANIMAL MAN #14
