Anime Review: Robotics;Notes - 4-5

In all honesty, I’m wondering if that whale tastes any good.

Episode 4
Well, in my opinion, episode four is one of the strangest episodes. In this episode, we finally meet Kona Furugoori (a.k.a Frau Kojiro) and, well… she isn’t what I expected. At first glance I thought she would be your typical princess type character (spoiled, impatient, lady-like, etc.), instead Kona is a yaoi-loving, internet freak. This caught me off guard and, at first, I didn’t like her character at all, but after watching the episode another time, I guess she grew on me. I can’t wait to see more of her. Also, if you don’t regularly use the Internet it might be hard to understand her as she uses a lot of terms (GTFO, IMHO, FFS, etc.) common on the Internet.

This episode did something that now made me see the characters in a new light. Most of the time in anime I don’t get a firm grasp of the age of the characters, so sometimes it seems like characters are being too mature or naive for their age. This episode showed Aki’s parents which, for me, made me realize that the characters were my age and overall were still kids and not adults. This really jumped out to me because now I can relate to the characters. Also, knowing that they are still kids makes their actions more understandable and justifiable.

Overall, this episode was kind of boring. Other than the introduction of a new character, this episode did little to advance the plot of the overall story. Seeing Kai lose in Kill Ballad was amusing, but it did not make this episode any less boring. As I predicted, Robotics;Notes has started off really slow as almost nothing super interesting has happened yet. The only interesting thing was the glimpse of a ghost that Kai saw. Hopefully things will pick up in the next episode.

Episode 5
Oh, will you look at that? Things are really starting to pick up. I have not played the original game of Robotics;Notes, so I’m extremely curious to where this anime is going. A lot happens in the episode that left me wanting more. Despite the slow start, Robotics;Notes is finally picking up and I can say that I’m more than thrilled.

Kai is actually pretty outgoing despite his lazy attitude towards the Robotics Club. After seeing a “ghost” in the previous episode, he is determined to find what he saw. This leads Kai to team up with Daitoku, who unexpectedly is really into urban legends. As a potential Robotics Club member, Daiktoku is quite the interesting character. Nothing right off the bat, but I personally like her, so I’m wondering how she will impact the story.

This episode really peaks my interest with the anime overall. A lot of sci-fi elements are present and I can see the anime going nowhere but up from here. Airi (a.k.a Sister Centipede) is an interesting character — or should I say AI? — and really has a lot of mystery surrounding her. With the introduction of Airi, and a curious message, I am pumped for the rest of this series!

My body is ready.
