Previously, in Amazing Spider-Man: Doctor Octopus has enacted his final plan; finding himself on death’s door with only hours to live, Ock uses a golden octobot to exchange bodies with Spider-Man. Now, Peter is trapped in Ock’s dying body, whilst Ock is out in the world doing who knows what with the great power at Spider-Man’s fingertips. 

Finding himself at his wits end, Peter manages to manipulate the golden octobot into contacting outside help, orchestrating a jailbreak from the Raft for Ock’s body with the help of the Scorpion, Trapster, and Hydro-Man. At the same time as Peter’s escape from the Raft, Morbius, the Living Vampire, also takes the opportunity to flee and seek redemption once again for his past actions. Now Peter must find a way to swap his personality back into his own body, before Doc Ock does something unspeakable as Spider-Man.

Being in the middle of the festive period, there really isn’t much out there on the shelves for us to pick up this week. Marvel aren’t sharing the festive spirit with Peter Parker, however, as an era comes to an end in Amazing Spider-Man #700!

Amazing Spider-Man has been in the news a lot over the last few weeks — especially due to the repercussions of issues #698-700. There’s been internet outrage, people swearing off comic books forever, and even death threats to the writer of the comic. And yet, Amazing Spider-Man continues to be my favorite ongoing comic at this point in time. I will always have a soft spot for Peter Parker, and he will always be my favorite character, but I’m not letting that bias color this choice -– Amazing Spider-Man has been, for lack of a better word, amazing this year.

I feel that sometimes, comic fans can become jaded. Event fatigue, multiple books starring the same characters — there are many reasons why comic fans can get bored of the same old stuff happening, and it’s been the reason why lots of people have dropped comics for a while, even if they return to them at a later point in life. And yet, I get the feeling that whenever any of the big comic companies try something different, they get nothing but flack for it, and this irritates me to no end.

Previously, in Amazing Spider-Man: Peter Parker’s mind has been trapped inside Doctor Octopus’ decrepit, dying body. Using his mental control over Ock’s octobots, Peter is able to call for help from the Trapster and Hydro-Man, who break Ock’s body out of the Raft super-max prison.

Also an inmate of the Raft is Dr. Michael Morbius, also known as Morbius the Living Vampire. Morbius was until recently a member of the Horizon Labs think tank alongside Peter Parker himself, but events conspired involving the Lizard that lead to Morbius going on an out-of-control blood frenzy, and subsequent defeat at the hands of Spider-Man. But Morbius is, as ever, looking to atone for his past, and Ock’s jailbreak gives him ample opportunity to escape the Raft and seek redemption.

Previously, in Amazing Spider-Man: Doctor Octopus is dying, his body ravaged by his numerous battles with superheroes such as Spider-Man, as well as the radiation from the experiment that grafted four metal tentacles to his body years ago. Ock attempts to take over Manhattan with only his mind and an army of Octobots, and then holds the world ransom when this scheme fails. Both times, Ock and his Sinister Six are defeated as Ock edges closer to the end of his life.

In his most despicable act as a supervillain, Doctor Octopus has managed to transfer his mind into Spider-Man’s body, giving him all of Spidey’s abilities and memories, whilst trapping Peter Parker in Ock’s own decrepit, dying body. Ock/Spidey visits Peter/Ock at the Raft, and reveals his plan, but not how the mind-switch occurred. Ock’s body goes into heart failure, and medics rush in to try and resuscitate the dying doctor as Ock, in Spider-Man’s body, leaves to enjoy his new life as Peter Parker.

I seem to be repeating myself every week at the moment, but it’s yet another massive week from Marvel, as Jonathan Hickman’s Avengers finally hits the stands, and who could forget the small matter of Amazing Spider-Man #699 coming out? DC-wise it’s business as usual, with the next chapters of the excellent “Rotworld” saga being released.

Previously, in Amazing Spider-Man: As a result of the numerous beatings he has received over the years, Doctor Octopus’ body has been ravaged and he is now slowly succumbing to brain damage. After holding the world ransom and using his Sinister Six to defeat the Avengers, Doctor Octopus was finally defeated and captured by Spider-Man and finds himself an inmate of the Raft with only hours left to live.

Peter Parker battles a pair of Hobgoblins and with the help of his Horizon Labs co-worker Max Modell, defeats them both as well as destroying a cache of incredibly dangerous goblin weaponry. In other areas of his life, Aunt May now walks with a cane after sustaining injuries during a superhero battle, and Mary Jane Watson has opened a nightclub in the heart of downtown Manhattan.

Previously, in Amazing Spider-Man: It seemed that Phil Urich had murdered Roderick Kingsley, the original Hobgoblin, and in doing so took on his persona, becoming the Kingpin’s top enforcer and assassin. Urich used his newfound infamy to enrich his personal life by selling footage of himself in action to the Daily Bugle, also winning the heart of reporter Norah Winters in the process.

It transpired that Kingsley was not dead however, and has since returned to his Hobgoblin guise and challenged Urich for the title. Trapped in the middle of all this are Peter Parker and Max Modell, who have fled the Kingpin’s stronghold of Shadowland with the Goblin Key in their grip — this key will unlock Norman Osborn’s greatest stash of goblin weaponry ever, and Peter and Max are intent on making sure neither goblin gets it.

Previously, in Amazing Spider-Man: Phil Urich murdered Roderick Kingsley and took on his identity as the newest incarnation of the Hobgoblin. Urich now works a double life, both as a reporter for the Daily Bugle and as the Kingpin’s top enforcer. Yet, it is revealed that Kingsley is not dead, and that Urich murdered his brother Daniel instead. Kingsley returns to New York in order to exact his revenge on Phil and reclaim his Hobgoblin persona.

Horizon Labs scientist Tiberius Stone has been working undercover for the Kingpin, and has stolen plans for a spider-sense jammer developed by the genius think tank during the Spider-Island fiasco. Using the machine, Stone is able to overload Spider-Man’s Spider-Sense so that he sees every little danger as a high level threat. To make matters worse, it seems that Urich has deduced Peter’s identity as Spider-Man, and has kidnapped him as a result.

Previously, in Amazing Spider-Man: After losing his spider-sense in a battle with Alistaire Smythe and the Scorpion, Spider-Man worked closely with his friend, Shang-Chi, to develop a new martial art to replace it. Then, during the Spider-Island crisis, the geniuses at Horizon Labs were able to rig up devices across Manhattan that were able to re-ignite Spidey’s spider-sense. Secretly, one of the scientists at Horizon, Tiberius Stone, stole the plans for these devices and gave them to the Kingpin.

At the same time, Phil Urich was able to kill the original Hobgoblin, Roderick Kingsley, and take his place as the newest Hobgoblin. He now finds himself as the Kingpin’s top enforcer, and uses his exploits to win favour at the Daily Bugle and with his reporter girlfriend, Norah Winters. Despite this, it was revealed that Kingsley was not killed—in fact, it was his brother Daniel in the costume that Phil murdered, and Roderick has returned to the USA in order to exact his revenge.

Previously, in Amazing Spider-Man: Demonstrating his newest discovery, Peter Parker caused a teenager, Andy Maguire, to gain superpowers. The Avengers and Future Foundation have classified Andy as an Alpha level threat—as his power levels grow, he will eventually become more powerful than all of them combined. They task Spider-Man with training Andy, but all has not gone as planned.

After a confrontation with the Jackal, who wanted to clone Andy and replicate his powers, Spider-Man realised that Andy didn’t have what it takes to be a hero, and has decided to use his scientific know-how to remove Andy’s powers and stop him from being a threat. Unfortunately, Andy has other ideas, and now he and Spidey are on a collision course to do battle.

It seems the next stages for Marvel NOW! are in the works as Marvel’s solicitations for December 2012 confirm that The Amazing Spider-Man will be ending with its 700th issue while Wolverine will close with #317. Given that those are two of Marvel’s biggest and most popular characters, it’s pretty evident that January will yield the Marvel NOW! reboots of both these title.

Also ending is Captain America and… with issue #640 which stars Black Widow in the guest role.

Previously, in Amazing Spider-Man: At a demonstration of Peter Parker’s new Parker Particles discovery, teenager Andy Maguire was struck by an errant energy beam and transformed into a superhuman with multiple powers, including flight, energy projection, super speed, and many more. However Andy can only use one power at a time, and has taken the superhero identity of Alpha.

Horizon Labs agreed to allow Alpha to be their spokes-hero in order to prevent his family from suing them, and the Avengers teamed Alpha with Spider-Man in order to teach him the meaning of great power and great responsibility. Watching from the shadows, the cloning genius the Jackal realises that Parker Particles are something that he could use in his own twisted experiments, and decides to return to menace Spider-Man once again.
