The next stage of Hickman’s Avengers is moving along at a steady pace, and this issue we see a small crew of heroes set out for a trip to Hong Kong to infiltrate a casino. It’s a fun little single-issue story that includes some notable character work and nice artwork.

Hickman’s Avengers has reached forth into its next stage. The Gardeners are moving forth with a plot that they’ve been working towards since issue #1 and it seems that Nightmask and Starbrand are present to see it set into motion. And there’s a giant brain.

Much like the structure that Jonathan Hickman used when he started his run on the Fantastic Four, we’re seeing the writer tell several single-issue stories focusing on various characters and subjects within the Marvel U. Last issue we saw his introduction for Hyprion, and here we get a look at the new Smasher and her role in the Shi’ar Imperium. Plus, some info that’s definitely going to come into play in the recently announced Infinity event.
In addition to my discussion and review about this issue of Avengers, I’ll be talking about this weeks New Avengers #3, which shows the ties between the two titles, and how they both are leading forth to Infinity.

Marvel’s Free Comic Book Day issue was announced a few months back, but was shrouded in secrecy. The cover of the issue was unveiled today, with the tagline “Infinity,” and a picture of Thanos shattering through images of lots of major heroes.
This is apparently the lead-in to the next big Avengers event, with more details forthcoming.
FCBD: Infinity hits on Free Comic Book Day, May 4th, and is written by Jonathan Hickman, with art by Jim Cheung.

The second story of Jonathan Hickman’s Avengers begins here, as a group of members from the expanded team heads forth to the Savage Land to deal with the fallout of their mission on Mars. As per usual with Hickman, things remain cryptic as he teases elements of bigger things to come, and utilizes the newly returned Hyperion to his fullest as the Superman analog he’s always been.

As the new, expanded Avengers roster is assembled, Jonathan Hickman brings his first arc to a close. In three issues, he tells a rather biblical tale about the creation of life on a barren world. Just a walk in the park for Hickman, as per usual with his high-concept, cerebral books.

Since the Avengers disassembled and became the New Avengers for the first time, Brian Bendis has been the name attached to Marvel’s premier team. Meanwhile, in the past several years, Jonathan Hickman had been constructing one of the greatest runs on Fantastic Four since John Byrne’s. After 60 issues, Hickman completed his run in ways only he could and now he’s moving forth to take over the Avengers.
Hickman brings with him his signature style of constructing hugely expansive and high concept stories in a story called “Avengers World.” In a mission that goes wrong, Captain America is forced to reach out to heroes across the globe to form a new, expanded team of Avengers. Welcome to Hickman’s Avengers. Hold on to your hats.

Marvel seems to have started teasing their teasers, with a cryptic image dubbed ‘Avengers Omega’ popping up in advance of their recently announced Next Big Thing Liveblog which will take place tomorrow.
With Jonathan Hickman taking the reins of the Avengers franchise from Brian Michael Bendis, it’s likely that he will be on the blog, and with very little released information about his second title, New Avengers, we may soon shed some light on his direction for that book.
Or, it could be something else entirely. Find out tomorrow!

Marvel has been promising long-lasting changes to the Marvel Universe in the aftermath of Avengers vs. X-Men and it seems that they were not lying. Starting in October, Marvel will launch “Marvel NOW”, what they claim will be an accessible entry point for lapsed and new readers into the Marvel Universe with #1s.
Read on for details.
