Previously, in Green Lantern: The Third Army was defeated when the Guardians of the Universe attempted to draw too much power from their power source – the First Lantern. Inadvertently freeing the supremely powerful entity, the Guardians were powerless to stop the First Lantern wrecking havoc across the universe. His modus operandi is to track the lifepaths of his enemies and change them in subtle ways to feast on their despair, eventually planning to gain enough power to rewrite reality permanently.

Hal Jordan and Sinestro were attacked by the Guardians prior to their Third Army invasion and banished to the Dead Zone. Newest Earth Green Lantern Simon Baz tracked the pair to the Dead Zone, but was imprisoned there himself. With the help of the Templar Guardians, a hidden sect of Guardians who opposed the Third Army, Simon was able to escape once again and bring Sinestro back to the land of the living with him. Now the only way for Hal Jordan to return to our world is to become a master of the Black Lantern Ring – Hal Jordan must die.

Instead, he came face to face with Black Hand, the homicidal supervillain and the universe’s only current Black Lantern. Sinestro’s Green Lantern ring was sent to Earth, where it found Simon Baz, an unfortunate man who has been branded a terrorist after a van theft gone wrong. Simon has managed to get on the wrong side of the American Government, as well as the Justice League, but after forging an almost-truce with Agent Fed, the lead investigator into his alleged terrorism charges, the Third Army tore through the building and put them both in jeopardy.
