Film Review: This Is The End

image

“What, are you telling me The Green Goblin here can’t afford to buy us more food?”

Basing any feature length film on what was previously a short film is almost always a dubious proposition. What works well for thirty or so minutes often ends up feeling padded when transitioned into the ninety-plus minute range. I’ve never seen Jay & Seth Versus the Apocalypse, but it always sounded like a premise that would have been funny for a few minutes.

When it was announced that Seth Rogen was going to co-write & co-direct a feature length version of this film, I was filled with dread over what would likely be the end result, a two hour film with twenty minutes of laughs in it. As much as I loved bragging about being right on the money with my initial prediction for last week’s The Purge, I am similarly pleased to report that I was equally wrong with my prediction for This is the End

“Pineapple Express 2” Red Band Trailer

For fans of the original Ruben Fleischer film, prepare to be disappointed. Sony has put out this obvious April Fool’s day joke in anticipation of their upcoming comedy This is the End.

With most of the main cast from Pineapple Express starring in This is the End, it’s obvious that they had a little fun on set reprising their roles from the stoner comedy.

It may not be an actual trailer, but for the fans it’s some nice fun.

Film Review: Oz The Great and Powerful

image

“Good work, you just sneezed away the plan.”

Oz The Great and Powerful seemed to be one of the more interesting films on the 2013 release schedule. Part of me cringed at the notion of it turning into another Alice in Wonderland style-over-substance fiasco. But another part of me believed that with Sam Raimi behind the camera, this could be a good film, and a nice companion piece to the classic 1939 The Wizard of Oz.

So, which is it? Read on to find out…

Jason Clarke Joins “Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes”

With James Franco seemingly ruling himself out of a return back in December, it’s now been confirmed that Zero Dark Thirty star Jason Clarke has joined Dawn of the Planet of the Apes. His role, as of this time, is currently unspecified.

More after the break.

In Retrospect: Spider-Man 3

image

The first of a hopefully semi-regular piece, I thought I’d maybe start looking back at some of the films of yesteryear that didn’t do quite as well as anticipated or were just flat-out awful. My aim? To try to salvage something and suggest why the film really isn’t that bad in retrospect.

Did you like the cheesy title? Yeah, me neither.

Anyways, without further ado, for this debut edition of “In Retrospect,” I bring you Spider-Man 3.

First Official Trailer For “Spring Breakers”

If you haven’t heard about Harmony Korine’s Spring Breakers, starring Selena Gomez, Vanessa Hudgens, Ashley Benson, Rachel Korine, and James Franco, it’s probably not what you think it is (or maybe it is) based on its title and the Disney stars starring in it.

As you can see from the trailer, it’s about four college girls who take the spring break experience to an extreme level. Sure, the essential spring break past times are involved — partying, drinking, fornicating — but so are a lot of drugs and a long-winded crime spree — especially when they encounter the character of Franco’s, who channels his inner Riff Raff — all while wearing nothing but bikinis the whole time.

Plus, a trailer about a spring break-centered film isn’t complete without Skrillex and the words “spring break” repeated over and over.
