image

Writer: Jason Aaron
Penciller: Nick Bradshaw
Inker: Waldon Wong
Colourist: Laura Martin
Letterer: Virtual Calligraphy’s Joe Caramagna

Previously, in Wolverine and the X-Men: Since the day that the Jean Grey School opened, Kade Kilgore and the new Hellfire Club have been trying to shut it down – or blow it to pieces, whatever works. Having failed with their direct approaches, the kids of the Hellfire Club have turned to more underhanded plots. Their newest scheme has been to create their own villainous school, the Hellfire Academy. Staffed with teachers such as Mystique, Sauron, and intergalactic bounty hunter Starblood, the school trains its students to be the best villains they can be.

Having already lost Glob Herman and Idie to the Hellfire Academy, Wolverine redoubled his efforts to try and find its location to rescue his lost students and shut it down permanently. But a traitor within their midst meant that their efforts were for naught – Toad, the Jean Grey School janitor, has betrayed Wolverine in order to be reunited with his lover Husk who has been working with the Hellfire Academy since quitting her teaching position. Toad, Husk, and Quentin Quire all teleport away from the school, joining the Hellfire Club’s crusade against Wolverine and his students.

Comic Review: Wolverine and the X-Men #30

image

Writer: Jason Aaron
Artists: Pasqual Ferry, Pepe Larraz and Salva Espin
Colourist: James Campbell
Letterer: Virtual Calligraphy’s Clayton Cowles

Previously, in Wolverine and the X-Men: The Hellfire Club, now run by 12-year old Kade Kilgore and his cadre of pre-teen menaces, has targeted the Jean Grey School for destruction. After severe failed head-on attempts to destroy or undermine the school, they have instead started their own Hellfire Academy, staffed with supervillains and out to train young mutants in ways to survive – by any means possible. Glob Herman and Idie have abandoned the Jean Grey School in order to join the Hellfire Academy.

In one of their failed attempts to destroy the school, super-intelligent Brood student Broo was shot in the head and sustained major brain damage. No longer is he the most eloquent, intellectual member of the Jean Grey School – instead, he is a feral creature who cannot communicate. Idie was charged with his care, but given her recent disappearance, Broo has been left unattended. Months previously, an alien biologist bounty hunter attacked the school with Broo’s death in mind – Kitty Pryde and the students defeated him, and now he is held on the SWORD Peak facility under close guard.

Comic Review: Wolverine and the X-Men #29

image

Writer: Jason Aaron
Artist: Ramon Perez
Colourist: Laura Martin
Letterer: Virtual Calligraphy’s Joe Caramagna

Previously, in Wolverine and the X-Men: The Jean Grey School has now been open for a few months, and has seen students graduate, such as Angel, and new students join, such as the time displaced original X-Men. Faculty members have also changed, with Husk leaving the school, and Kitty Pryde stepping down as headmistress in place of Storm. One thing remains constant despite the changes that the school has endured – this is the school where students and faculty will be the best there is at what they do.

However, the school has faced its share of threats as well. The Hellfire Club has targeted the school numerous times, going so far as to brainwash certain members of the student body, and attempt to recruit others to their own cause. They have also been assembling their own villainous faculty including Sauron, and have welcomed Glob Herman from the Jean Grey School into their new Hellfire Academy.

Comic Review: Thor: God of Thunder #8

image

Ah, Thor - God of Thunder. The series that keeps on giving. I seriously believe that Jason Aaron just fished into my own mind and found out all of my subconscious desires as far as what I never knew I wanted (nay, needed) in a Thor comic, and then Marvel stuck Esad Ribic on interiors because he’s the greatest thing to happen to Thor art since Simonson’s first KRAKOOM! Yeah, this book can still get it.

Unfortunately, the class is co-opted by Dog Logan, Wolverine’s time travelling half-brother.

Colourist: Laura Martin
Letterer: Virtual Calligraphy’s Joe Caramagna

Previously, in Wolverine and the X-Men: Worried that he is losing touch with his teaching abilities, Wolverine selects the most dangerous and most in need of assistance students from his classes, and takes them to the Savage Land on a field trip. Their mission, and the only way to pass the class, is for the students to work together and escape the Savage Land, rendezvousing at the parked Blackbird on the opposite side of the jungle. Wolverine leaves them to fend for themselves and stalks away to watch in peace.

The students don’t fare too well, with their lack of teamwork scattering them across the jungle. Wolverine is distracted from his young charges however by the appearance of his long-lost half brother, Dog Logan, who promptly beats Wolverine to a pulp and captures him. Using the Time Diamonds that allowed him to travel from the past, Dog rips open the timestream and sets threats from across history on Wolverine’s unsuspecting students.

Comic Review: Wolverine and the X-Men #26

image

Writer: Jason Aaron
Artist: Ramon Perez
Colourist: Laura Martin
Letterer: Virtual Calligraphy’s Joe Caramagna

Previously, in Wolverine and the X-Men: The Jean Grey School has accepted a large amount of new recruits over the last few weeks. The five original X-Men have arrived from the past; numerous X-kids who were living on Utopia have enrolled after the Avengers/X-Men war; and new mutants have been appearing all over the world after the Phoenix Force reignited the mutant race. The student body is ever growing, and with each student needing their own special mentoring to do with their powers, the faculty are taxing themselves to keep up, especially with outside threats like the Hellfire Club constantly out to destroy the school.

Wolverine has taken a small selection of students to the Savage Land in order to train them himself.  Quentin Quire, Shark Girl, Eye-Boy, Sprite, Idie, Broo, and Glob Herman are released into the jungle with one mission – get back to the Blackbird together. Wolverine leaves them to it, and watches them from afar. But whilst studying his young charges, Wolverine is attacked by his long-lost brother, Dog, who has time travelled to the present to show his brother who’s boss.

image

Writer: Jason Aaron
Artist: Ramon Perez
Colourist: Laura Martin
Letterer: Virtual Calligraphy’s Joe Caramagna

Previously, in Wolverine and the X-Men: The Schism between Wolverine and Cyclops has sent the two halves of the mutant population in vastly different directions. Among the teaching staff are headmistress Storm, teachers Kitty Pryde, Rachel Grey and Iceman, whilst students include Genesis, the teenage clone of Apocalypse, psychic maelstrom Quentin Quire, and the original five X-Men, transported from the past by the Beast.

Between the threat of the Hellfire Club, the recently departed Murder Circus, and Mystique and her Brotherhood of Evil Mutants, the school is constantly under threat. As a result, Wolverine doesn’t often get a lot of time to do any actual teaching. Now it’s time to change that – with a field trip to the Savage Land!

After the events of the Avengers/X-Men conflict, Storm’s marriage to the Black Panther was annulled, and Kitty’s relationship with Colossus was dissolved. Comic Review: Thor: God of Thunder #4

image

As the first arc of Jason Aaron’s new Thor series comes to its penultimate issue, we start to see the bigger picture coming together. Thor takes some time here to learn about the enemy at hand, and things really get interesting, but there’s no time wasted as the issue as filled with just as much action and horror as you’d expect from this comic.
