Comic Review: Green Lantern #12

Previously, in Green Lantern: After an escapade across the planet of the Indigo Tribe, Hal Jordan and Sinestro accidentally released the murderous Black Hand from the control of the Tribe. Hand killed himself and was resurrected by the power of the Black Lanterns once again, as he had been in the past as a precursor to the Blackest Night, a time of universal calamity.

Sinestro and Hal turned to the Book of the Black, the magical book full of prophecies that the Black Lanterns used during their last invasion. It transported them across the universe to Earth, where Black Hand had resurrected his family for his own twisted desires. Now Hal and Sinestro find themselves at the mercy of Black Hand, and he is out for revenge.

Comic Review: Secret Six: The Darkest House

The final collected edition of the fan-favourite series, The Darkest House collects the two-issue crossover with Doom Patrol, before collecting the final six issues of the series. The crossover sees the Secret Six and Keith Giffen’s incarnation of the Doom Patrol go head-to-head once again in an all-out epic brawl of humorous proportions before the trade wraps up with a final story, in which the Secret Six literally go to hell in an attempt to rescue Scandal’s love, Knockout.

Comic Review: Secret Six: The Reptile Brain

The fifth collected volume of the 2008 series, this volume collects two different storylines. First up is the story-arc which names this collection, The Reptile Brain, which sees Bane’s recently formed Secret Six recruited by a branch of the US government to travel to the mysterious land of Skartaris, and conquer it in the name of the USA. However, the mission won’t be as straightforward as expected, as Scandal’s Secret Six is hired by Amanda Waller to stop them.

Ending this collection is a cross-over with Paul Cornell’s Action Comics run, which sees the Secret Six hired by Lex Luthor. Their mission? Protect him against the infamous Vandal Savage.

Comic Review: Green Arrow: Heading into the Light

Heading into the Light deals with the aftermath of Green Arrow’s revelations in Identity Crisis. With his home destroyed, Oliver knows that this is a personal attack on himself by someone who knows his civilian identity. The culprit – the vengeful Dr. Light, who has allied himself with a variety of villains who seek to put Oliver through a horrific ordeal in an attempt to break him, threatening to destroy Star City, or kill Ollie’s loved ones.

Is this another strong volume, or does this feel like an unnecessary tie-in which breaks up the series rhythm?

Comic Review: Secret Six: Cats In The Cradle

The latest trade paperback offering of the much acclaimed Secret Six series, Cats In The Cradle focuses on Thomas Blake, better known as Catman venturing out to Africa in search of the three men who have kidnapped his son. The path of destruction wrecked is devastating, leaving the very existence of the Secret Six as a team in question. Rounding this collection off is a one-shot penned by Ostrander, before Simone returns to writing duties for the much talked about Elseworlds style Western issue, The Unforgiveable.

Gail Simone herself has come out and said that this is one of her favourite collections of her work, and with that coming from a much loved creator; it has to be good, surely?

Comic Review: Secret Six: Danse Macabre

Somewhat similar to the previous volume, this features two standalone issues before the main storyline. In the first, John Ostrander takes an issue to spotlight Deadshot, before Black Alice ventures to try and join the team. The four issue storyline which follows tries to blend together John Ostrander’s old Suicide Squad series, alongside Secret Six and the Blackest Night saga. Do the three easily join together to make a great story, or does it read like another underwhelming event tie-in book?
