Segments

The Hall of Games: Metroid

“The Hall of Games” is a brand new segment that will look at games that have made a significant impact on video game development and changed the way people have come to think of our interactive medium. From “Super Mario” to “Grand Theft Auto” to  “Doom”, expect to get a crash course education about the industry’s evolution bit-by-bit, from its pixelated infancy to the beautiful, dominant force it is today.

While most people are busy looking out for the biggest and newest game titles, a lot can be learned about gaming by looking back at the past. Over time, many games become forgotten or overlooked. There were two big 25th anniversaries this year for Nintendo but only Link saw his birthday remembered. It’s only fitting then that we dedicate a little bit of time to discussing this forgotten classic of the NES era: Metroid.

Can I Haz Samus Figma?

Why, yes. Yes, I may haz in 2012. Max Factory is bringing us a Figma of Samus Aran based on her Other M design. On the other side, we have Good Smile releasing a 1/6 scale PVC figure of Zero Suit Samus partnered with a cute little Metroid.

With no exact month set for the Figma, Zero Suit Samus has a release date of June 2012. I definitely want to get that Samus Figma, though; I wonder what kind of accessories she’ll come with.

3DS Ambassadors, These Might Be Your GBA Games

[via]

Nintendo’s price cut in August agitated many early 3DS owners, but to ease their pain was the revelation that they would be receiving 20 free games, 10 NES and 10 Gameboy Advance, for the 3DS Virtual Console before the end of 2011.

The NES titles were delivered back in September but the final GBA games haven’t been heard from in months. Apparently that’s all changed since some Japanese 3DS owners have received word from Nintendo that they would be getting their games on December 16th.

Nintendo was even nice enough to give them a list of the great titles, which is after the break.

Project Varia: Arm Cannon

11-year old Joseph describes, “Project Varia is an attempt to build a fully wearable Samus suit.” He and his dad will try to construct the arm cannon, helmet, shoulder/chest plates, and the bottom half of the Varia suit before Halloween.

This video showcases the construction of the arm cannon, and it isn’t your typical paper mache project, folks. An amazing amount of detail is displayed, as they meticulously shape the cannon, solder the LEDs, and insert the Mother Brain. The best part is near the end when Joseph demos the finished product.

It’s an 8-minute video, but well worth the watch. You can also visit [Project Varia] to get an update of their progress.

Soma’s Toy Tuesday: Samus Phazon Suit

Today on Toy Tuesday I would like to talk about the Samus Phazon Suit statue by First 4 Figures. First off, I would like to say that this is one amazing piece. Samus is a character from a popular video game franchise called Metroid. This version of Samus is from Metroid Prime. I love how dramatic Samus is posed, almost looks like she could really be blasting her cannon off. Just when you think it looks good in daylight, turn off the lights and turn on the awesome. I would love to have this figure as a night light. At $224.99, if I had the money to blow I would definitely order myself one. You can get your hands on one too if you have the money to burn but hurry because they’re limiting production to 1500 pieces worldwide. The release date is set on July 9th 2009
