Geek Spotlight: Seeing Double

Hey, wasn’t there another movie like that out before?” Or, “Hey, that movie is totally copying ______!

Ever find yourself in the position above where you see a trailer for a movie and instantly think, “I’ve seen this exact story before… but in another movie”. Well fret not, in this piece, I’ll be going a bit into why every now and then you’ll have a year at the theater where you’ll come across similar-to-exact films, in terms of content, within a short period of time and how often this has occurred over the years.

Film Review: Mirror Mirror

“This queen radiates crazy.”

Tarsem is one of the most visually gifted directors in film history and I don’t think anyone would begrudge him this fact. The content of his films (with the possible exception of The Fall) has always been the weakest link in their respective chains.

The Cell was gorgeous to look at and had some interesting concepts, but the performances were laughably bad, particularly Vince Vaughn, and it really fell apart in the third act. Last year’s Immortals was one of the worst movies I’ve seen in a long time, ending up being nothing more than an embarrassing mash-up of 300 & Clash of the Titans, combining the worst elements of both.

So when the first images and trailers for Mirror Mirror began cropping up, I held out little hope for it, beyond praying it would be better than Immortals. How wrong I was…

Movie Forecast: March 2012

March has come and it’s time to spring into a new lineup of films. This month features nine new wide releases along with three notable limited release films that I have my eyes on the lookout for. Of the nine new releases, three will be released in 3D.

There’s a little bit of everything for everyone at the movies this month, but March features two of the highest profile projects of the year in John Carter and The Hunger Games. Both films made it onto my most anticipated list (found here), so be sure to check them out. Though I doubt most people will need convincing to go see The Hunger Games.

New “Mirror Mirror” Featurette

With Tarsem Singh’s (Immortals) own take on the classic fairy tale Snow White getting set for its release in March, here is a new featurette for the re-imagining.

Carrying a more lighthearted and fun tone than its Universal Studio’s counterpart—Snow White and the HuntsmanMirror Mirror looks to actually be a lot of fun to watch based on this featurette. Say what you will about the writing in Singh’s Immortals, it was still a visually impressive film and and I look for him to continue his visual creativity with Mirror Mirror

“Mirror, Mirror” (2012) Trailer #1

Hot on the heels of Universal’s debut trailer for their take on the classic Snow White fairy tale—Snow White and the Huntsman—Relativity Media has released their own trailer for their version of the story. Mirror, Mirror is being directed by Immortals helmer, Tarsem Singh, and this adaptation is pretty much the polar opposite.

Whereas Universal’s take leans more towards a Lord of the Rings look and feel for the film, Relativity Media’s take feels more like Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland. Not as serious, more lighthearted and this version includes dwarves! Legitimate dwarves! Oh and genre fans should be happy to know that Mirror, Mirror also stars fan favourite Nathan Lane.

Mirror, Mirror hits theatres in the spring while Snow White and the Huntsman hits theatres in the summer. Which do you think will be the better re-imagining?
