Movie Forecast: May 2013

image

It’s that time of the year again. May is once again set to kick off the summer season in cinema.

Last year, The Avengers set a new all-time record for an opening weekend, and though this year’s kick-starter features a character from that film, this month won’t compare to last year.

There are a total of 14 notable films out this month divided into 10 wide releases and five limited releases.

Opening up the month of May and highlighting the month is Iron Man 3 with other high profile films being The Great Gatsby, Star Trek Into Darkness, Fast & Furious 6, The Hangover Part III and the recently moved up After Earth.

Movie Forecast: April 2013

Following a heavy month of releases in March, the dumping ground that is April is upon us.

This month only features nine notable releases with only one of them being in 3D — the re-release of Jurassic Park

Notable films to be on the lookout for include Fede Alvarez’s reboot of Evil Dead, Joseph Kosinki’s Oblivion and Michael Bay’s Pain & Gain.

Hit the break for the month’s release schedule.

Movie Forecast: March 2013

image

This month last year brought one of 2012’s biggest hits in the film adaptation of The Hunger Games and 2013 looks to find some repeat success with its line up.

15 notable films will grace theatres this month, including a variety of big budget pictures. Of the new releases, four will be in 3D and only one of them is set for a limited release (Stoker).

The month is highlighted by Bryan Singer’s return behind the camera in Jack the Giant Slayer, Sam Raimi’s OZ: The Great and Powerful (prequel to Wizard of OZ), DreamWorks Animation’s The Croods, and finally G.I. Joe: Retaliation.

Beyond those big four names, the rest of the month has quite an interesting selection of films worth checking out.

Movie Forecast: February 2013

The month of February is in and it is being kicked off with a movie whose title may be an appropriate affirmation of what this month may want me to do.

11 films grace the big screen this month, with only one film set for a 3D release (Escape From Planet Earth), with the rest in standard 2D.

Among the highlights of the month is Valentine’s Day weekend — which has all four films being released on the holiday — starts on a Thursday this year, which means all four releases will have four-day weekends at the box office.

Hit the break to check out the month’s full schedule and trailers for the films as well as the film staff’s picks of the month.

Movie Forecast: January 2013

image

It is now 2013, and with the new year comes a whole new slew of films.

There are fourteen new notable releases for the month of January, broken up into twelve nationwide releases — including the expansions of three limited released films last month — and two limited released films (Quartet and John Dies at the End).

Of the new releases, only two films this month are being released in 3D (Texas Chainsaw Massacre 3D & Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters) with the majority of 3D theaters still being used by holiday holdovers from 2012.

If there was one word to describe the month of January, it would be wildcard, as that would be the most appropriate way to describe this month’s roster of films. Many of them could be really good, but they also have the potential to be real downers, however interesting I think they are.

Hit the break to check out this month’s releases.

Movie Forecast: December 2012

image

With 2012 wrapping up for the holiday season, award contenders, franchise starters and a return to Middle-earth is what Hollywood has in store for us this December.

The month of December sees the release of thirteen notable releases split between nationwide and limited, including the re-release of September’s End of Watch, which is looking to take advantage of a weak start to the month.

Of the films set to open this month, ten are set for nationwide, with the remaining three (Promised Land, Zero Dark Thirty, West of Memphis) going limited with a nationwide expansion later in 2013.

Headlining the month is the long-awaited return to Middle Earth with Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, which is one of only two 3D films for the month and an intriguing case due to its release in both standard 24 and 48 frames per second.

Hit the break to check out the month’s schedule.

Movie Forecast: October 2012

[via]

After a slow month of September, which ended off with two great films in End of Watch and Looper, the month of October comes with a slew of very interesting films.

There are a total of thirteen new, wide-released films for the month of October. Of those thirteen films, only two will be released in 3D, with those two films being Tim Burton’s Frankenweenie and Michael J. Basset’s Silent Hill: Revelation 3D.

With Halloween happening this month, you have your typical release of horror films, with three hitting theatres in the coming weeks: the aforementioned Silent Hill: Revelation 3D, the latest Paranormal Activity film, and one that personally interests me in Sinister

Also of note this month is the directorial return of The Wachowskis, who will be directing their first feature film since 2003’s The Matrix Revolutions alongside Run Lola Run helmer Tom Tykwer.

Once again, for the full month’s schedule, hit the break and check out what is my personal pick for the month.

Movie Forecast: September 2012

The summer season of blockbusters is over, and now it’s festival season for cinema. But that doesn’t mean that there aren’t many new films to watch. September is usually the time of the year where we see more smaller films getting released, but this September features some very notable films to be on the lookout for.

In total, there are 11 new wide-released films, along with three notable limited-released movies. Of the 11 new wide releases, four of them will be released in 3D.

Hit the break to see what’s coming up this month and which movie is my top pick.

Movie Forecast: August 2012

It’s already the month of August, and as summer winds down the last big blockbusters are set to close out the season.

Following July, which featured the fewest number of wide released films in a month, August features a total of sixteen wide-released films and one very notable limited release. There are only two 3D films this month with most 3D theatres being used for holdovers from the big summer blockbusters from previous months. From the Total Recall remake, to the third installment of Diary of Wimpy Kid, there’s something for everyone this month.

Movie Forecast: July 2012

July swings off to a quick start with the unusual and early release of Sony’s The Amazing Spider-Man reboot. With two mega blockbusters in the aforementioned Amazing Spider-Man and Warner Bros. The Dark Knight Rises, the month of July features the lowest number of major releases in a month this year with seven in total.

Four of the seven films will be released in 3D with those films being The Amazing Spider-Man, Katy Perry: Part of Me, Ice Age: Continental Drift and Step Up: Revolution

Movie Forecast: June 2012

Yes, yes, I know I’m a week late. However, the month of June is just underway with another wave of hotly anticipated summer blockbusters set for release this month. There’s a bunch of notable films including the likes of Snow White and the Huntsman, which opened up last Friday, along with films like Ridley Scott’s Prometheus and Pixar’s Brave set for release later this month. There are also a couple of interesting smaller films out so be sure to check them out when they’re released.

Movie Forecast: May 2012

It’s the month of May and all I can say is… May the 4th be with you! Because that is the sole date most of you all care about. The Avengers will cast some dark shadows over Dark Shadows, sink battleships, give you exactly what you expect when you’re not expecting, dictate what you will see this month and will probably leave you feeling like men in black as your life will feel complete as you write in your diaries about the kingdom of heaven you will see after watching the penultimate super hero movie as you say, God bless America.

Movie Forecast: April 2012

The month of April is shaping up to be quite an interesting month for movies. It features a total of twelve major releases, of which only two will be in 3D.

The month is being headlined by the 3D re-release of Titanic, the fourth theatrical installment of the American Pie series in American Reunion, the horror comedy Cabin in the Woods from Joss Whedon as well as the thriller The Raven which stars John Cusack.

Not exactly a month of huge blockbusters, but what makes this month interesting are all the smaller, limited released films planned for the month of April. You have films like the documentary Comic-Con Episode IV: A Fan’s Hope, as well as independent films like Bad Ass starring Danny Trejo, Bernie starring Jack Black, The Lady starring Michelle Yeoh and The Hunter starring Willem Dafoe. Also of note—though not listed below—is that the latest Bobcat Goldthwait movie, God Bless America (trailer can be found here), is being released digitally in April before making a limited run in theaters in May.

Movie Forecast: March 2012

March has come and it’s time to spring into a new lineup of films. This month features nine new wide releases along with three notable limited release films that I have my eyes on the lookout for. Of the nine new releases, three will be released in 3D.

There’s a little bit of everything for everyone at the movies this month, but March features two of the highest profile projects of the year in John Carter and The Hunger Games. Both films made it onto my most anticipated list (found here), so be sure to check them out. Though I doubt most people will need convincing to go see The Hunger Games.

Movie Forecast: February 2012

2012 got kicked off to a great start financially, and has provided me with some really entertaining films thus far. The month of February is highlighted once again by a film in my Top Ten anticipated list, as well as a handful of other really interesting films. In total, there are 14 wide released films, with only 3 of them being released in 3D.
