Our phones are smart, our glasses are smart*, and now our watches are smart, too. The Pebble is one of the first and most successful watches that can sync with both an iPhone and an android smartphone. This watch was destined for greatness when the Kickstarter project garnered funding that was over 10,266 times the project’s goal.
After being released a few weeks ago, I have extensively explored the The Pebble’s capabilities. Hit the break to read what I think of it.
The details on this officially licensed Aperture Laboratories Brand Cake Mix state that “The Cake is NOT a lie!” But these days, who can really be sure?
What is clear is that it’s pretty expensive as far cake mixes go. Expect to shell out $20 for it. You could just go to the grocery store and buy some Betty Crocker, but if you still feel you were denied some well deserved confectionery treats from Portal, you can order here.
The power of fandom brings to us an amazing replica of GLaDOS from Portal. Not only does it have the form down, but it also has function.
If you have the time and the means, you can make this yourself. You can find the 3D files at Thingiverse and the assembly instructions at Instructables.
Some video games have settings that do more than add mood to a story; they feel like characters of their own. I’m not just talking about the sprawling landscapes of open-world adventures like those in Red Dead Redemption or the The Elder Scrolls games. Instead, I’m interested in settings with a contained power — and sometimes, they’re more than they initially seem.
So hit the break for settings that carry power and meaning for their respective games. (And if you haven’t played the games, beware of minor spoilers!)
The DICE summit kicked off today with filmmaker J.J. Abrams and Gabe Newell, a co-founder of Valve, giving a talk about storytelling across platforms by analyzing storytelling between games and film.
As the talk was ending, the pair announced that they would like to “make this more than talks” and would like to find a partner to help create this game. Gabe Newell also said he would like to work with Abrams on any potential Half-Life or Portal movies in the future.
It isn’t clear when the game will come to fruition, what type of game it will be, or when the expected release is.
One of my favorite parts of the Portal games has to be the killer robots. GLaDOS and Wheatley both get the bulk of the credit, but we all know who provides the best comedic relief and sits back in the shadows: the Aperture Sentry Turret.
This little bot of death is sleek and stylish with beautiful lines, great aesthetics and dual mounted machine guns for extra firepower. And now you can own one with full motion sensing capabilities and sound effects to protect your living room (mounted guns not included).
Cave Johnson Needs Your Help To Create More “Portal 2” Test Chambers
My personal “Game of the Year 2011” has more content coming really, really soon. And it’s all going to be created by you.
Valve, with the extremely entertaining help of Cave Johnson, has finally announced the release of the map creator for Portal 2 so we can finally get back to science!
Download the “Perpetual Testing Initiative” on May 8, 2012.
In today’s featured video game match-up, voters are treated to a geektacular showdown between Personality Construct Wheatley and Earth’s leading heroine Female Shepard.
Meanwhile, the Otaku bracket features a secondary anime battle between Super Peace Busters childhood member Naruko “Anaru” Anjou and Sternbild City’s ‘Crusher of Justice’ Wild Tiger.
Help send two of these characters into the next round after the break!
Now that you’ve pre-ordered your Portal Gun, complete your Portal collection with this kit!
Have you been trying to fight boredom? Do you like being insulted? Is there a sack of potatoes you have lying around that you don’t know what to do with? Well ThinkGeek has a solution to your problems.
Introducing the PotatOS Science Kit! With this kit you can turn your ordinary boring potatoes into a monotone insulting machine. Who said that potato lab in Science class was pointless? With PotatOS, you can re-live those mundane classroom days but with an added kick. Science teachers take note, order a set of these when you do the potato experiment and your students will participate with gusto!… or not:
IMPORTANT NOTE PotatOS is a simulated science kit. It is not actually powered by the potato you supply. A single potato could not provide the voltage needed for LEDs and voice. An internal button-type battery provides power. However, PotatOS detects when it is connected to a potato giving the illusion of being powered by the potato. Gotcha? Good.
But still, isn’t it neat?
Order a kit now at ThinkGeek.com for a sale price of $24.99 while supplies last!
NECA is producing a full scale Portal Gun replica complete with lights, but I’m not sure about sounds. It would be nice if it was fully functional, though (heh).
Well, not exactly your life since we aren’t all a bunch of models, but it’s still a good example of what a hilarious pain-in-the-ass GLaDOS would be if she somehow invaded our smartphones.
Now all the tunes and sound effects you love are just a click away. The aptly named soundtrack, Songs to Test By, offers three volumes with a total of 64 tracks for your testing enjoyment.
The best part? It’s completely free to download! Have your favorite volume or all three, it’s all available at the link below!
Directed by Dan Trachtenberg, this fan-made, live action short will drop jaws if you’re a Portal fan. Our favorite characters are nowhere to be found, but it is still definitely a treat. The visual effects are exemplary and the mood is just right. If I were to ask for full feature length film, I’d want it to look like this.

For those of you who do not own a copy of Portal, here’s the perfect opportunity to add it to your Steam collection… free of charge!
The fine folks over at Valve are offering the exceptional first-person puzzler for no cost during the next few days. Just head on over to this link and make sure you have an account on Steam set-up. While you’re at it, you might want to thank Valve by picking up the equally awesome sequel, Portal 2. But that’s just a kind suggestion…
